The Cordial Eye in collaboration with teen artist Will Caolo and
the Hyannis Public Library
Overview
We propose continuing the
Hyannis Community Art
Wall until the wall where it
is currently sited is taken
down during the Hyannis
Public Libraryʼs renovation.
What is a community art wall?
●A living exhibition space for professional and
amatuer artists alike.
●Most often used by aerosol artists
●Creates space for free expression for all ages
This Hyannis Community Art Wall is unique because it
contains sections for commissioned professional work
and space for the art of any community member.
●Foster an intergenerational arts
community
●Drive foot traffic to Main Street
Hyannis and its businesses
●Promote community engagement for
the Hyannis Public Library
●Decrease instances of vandalism
Goals of the project
●Four 8ʼx12ʼ segments made of
4ʼX8ʼ plywood sheets on the
East-facing side of the Hyannis
Public Library.
●Each segment can be quickly
removed if needed.
●Since its inception, we have not
needed to remove any panels.
Removable and Reversible
Implementation
●Plywood structure is removable and reversible.
●Professional muralists will be commissioned
multiple times per year
● Sign-in/out at the Libraryʼs information desk
(in English, Spanish, and Portuguese) during
Library hours
●Surveillance cameras and facilities staff at the
Library monitor the wall on a daily basis.
Operations and Maintenance
●The Cordial Eye manages commissioning artists, community programming, and is
a general point of contact for oversight and maintenance.
●The Cordial Eye and Hyannis Public Library have an MOU governing procedures
and responsibilities
●Temporary sections can be removed and replaced.
●Daily monitoring by the Hyannis Public Libraryʼs surveillance cameras and facilities
staff.
Community Programming
Visiting the art wall has become an annual
field trip for the Barnstable High School art
department. Last year over one hundred
high school students learned from local
artists and contributed to the wall.
Other collaborators include the Hyannis
Public Library, the JFK Museum, the
Hyannis BID, and Hyannis Open Streets,
Transitions, and Cape Cod Alzheimer's
Family Support Center.
Outcomes
●Decrease in graffiti per BID annual
meeting
●Source of joy for tourists and locals of all
ages
●Contributions have been appropriate,
and often express feelings of love and
support for others
●Important large format workspace for
artists
