HomeMy WebLinkAboutN Hughes Letter of OppositionDear Members of the Barnstable Historic Commission: I am writing to express my concern about the proposed renovation of 43 Iyanough In Hyannis Port. I am distressed to see the magnitude of this proposed plan. A number of homes in the central village of Hyannis Port have been renovated in recent years, yet none have changed the scale of the domestic dwelling to the extent that this project seeks to do. Moreover, none have managed to radically reimagine the look of the village from the streets and/or from the water as this project would. In this block of the village, the homes--many formerly parts of the original Hallett House and Stoneleigh Gables Inn--are already in very close proximity. Five homes have property lines contiguous with 43 Iyanough, and this project threatens to significantly change the feel and look of the neighborhood. Additionally, I am concerned about where exactly the septic will be moved. The plans provided seem to suggest that the new addition and the pool will be on top of or near the edge of the current septic system. I have lived on this block for the past 40 years, and never could I have imagined such a structure rising before us all. The very essence of New England lies in its modesty, its scale, its reverence for history and tradition. In a too-rapidly changing world, Hyannis Port has been a place that reminds many of us of the importance and beauty of simplicity, of community, and of the natural world. I am hopeful that our village can maintain this cherished quality. Thank you for your attention to this letter and for your service to the Barnstable Historic Commission. Sincerely, Nancy Hughes 26 Longwood Avenue Hyannis Port, MA 02647
