HomeMy WebLinkAboutFloyd Letter of OppositionTo the Barnstable Historical Commission, (Erica Brown) I have only recently received Notice of the BHC Meeting scheduled for this afternoon, (Feb,18, 2025), with the agenda items listed for consideration, including the Application for Partial Demolition of the property located at 43 Iyanough Avenue, Hyannis Port, Ma. 02647. Unfortunately I am currently out of town so will not be able to attend the meeting in person but wanted to provide this letter which is intended to be included in the minutes and hopefully shared as part of the proceedings. I am writing to express serious concerns about the proposed developments planned for the property located at 43 Iyanough Avenue, Hyannis Port, as my property is located immediately West and we share a common property line. My family has been located at this location for seven generations and we have an expressed interest in the preservation of the Hyannis Port community, especially as it relates to the Historical nature of our unique and special community. In a nutshell, my concerns are as follows: 1- It would seem to me to be impossible to preserve the nature of a Historical Community, listed in the Historical National Registry, with a desired addition totaling 9,000 square foot building, including a fenced in pool. 2- Preserving the approach to our community is essential in preserving the Historic nature of Hyannis Port and this design not only completely alters the "street appeal" of the neighborhood, (in my opinion in a negative way), but also influences the expectations of a Historical Community for those not familiar with our historic culture. 3- I am not sure these next items are in the BHC perview for consideration but I will ask anyway because they are important. a). Have the plans been reviewed by a Barnstable Architectural Board for review and have any variances been applied for or granted if necessary? b.) Have these plans been reviewed by a Barnstable Planning and Zoning Committee to review factors such as setbacks, lighting, screening, sight restrictions, etcetera, plans shared with neighbors for review and comment? Speaking for myself, this is the very first time that I have been made aware of for any alterations to this property. There are many other factors for consideration in this complex development, too many to list here, but I will conclude by suggesting that this application be denied or at least tabled until some of these major changes can be properly reviewed in an effort to preserve the VERY IMPORTANT HISTORICAL NATURE OF Hyannis Port. We wish our new neighbors well and hope that they will share the desire to preserve the character of our special place, and that the Commission upholds it's mission to protect a community listed in the Historical National Register. Barnstable Historical Commission Mission Statement The Commission strives to promote an awareness of the community's heritage, to identify local preservation, to study public policies designed to protect and preserve history, and to provide opportunities for residents to share their historical legacy. .
