HomeMy WebLinkAboutFloyd CorrespondenceMr.Robert Frazee - Chairman. Barnstable Historical Commission I have considered the possibility that this exercise might be a complete waste of tfme, (and I highly value my tfme,) but there might be a chance that it could make a difference in the future. My family name is Bourne. They wiped out the town named after my family to create the Cape Cod Canal which, over the years, has benefited many people. This development that you have approved, located at 43 Iyanough Ave. in Hyannis Port will benefit only one person: THE OWNER. Re-reading the Mission Statement of the BHC, this decision is a travesty on many levels. Good Neighbors The owner, and counsel, both know that contact informatfon for ALL Hyannis Port residence is easily located in a Civic Associatfon directory. Any thought of “how hard it was to locate residence to reach out for comment”, is poppycock. It is simply a fact that these owners have no interest in being good neighbors as evidenced by skipping all meetfngs and being represented by counsel. Nice. Design I would like the Commission and the architect to advise ANYONE if they are aware of any historic house with a swimming pool located in the front yard. This is a travesty and the person at the Cape Cod Commission who signed off on this development should be removed for incompetence. You stated correctly that the Commission has no authority to declare how people spend their money, and counsel made it quite clear that they are within their legal, right, but your responsibility as a Commission is to preserve history. The conclusion of the agenda item prior to this project was to allow a questfonable project to move forward, but deemed it “no longer a historical house”, and made the recommendatfon that a date plaque not be affixed. Is the Commission concerned that a passerby might notfce and conclude that this decision to alter a historic sample of New England architecture in such a way makes absolutely NO SENSE AT ALL? This design at 43 Iyanough is a beautfful design, but it simply does not belong here. It belongs in a tony Boston suburb. To say that your hands are tfed by procedure, or that you have no control over what may be built after an 18 month reevaluatfon, is simply a cop out. Why are you there, and why does the Commission exist if these constraints prevail? As stated in my remarks, I respect the Commission. I know your job. I do your job in the Western Reserve of Ohio. The hard part is that it requires discretfon based upon what is right. Now respectiully I say, do your job. Learn to say no or what you do will not make a difference. If I knew then what I know now I would have saved valuable tfme and energy. This decision was baked in a long tfme ago, and the lawyers knew it. In closing, for many years to come, people will come to our unique New England community and when passing by this house, (and this locatfon is a major egress of Hyannis Port), they will say “Look dear, and this is what money can buy“. How sad,… But you can help prevent this by simply doing your job. Not easy to do and it frustrates me to know that this is all we have to count on to preserve our New England character. Franklin B. Floyd Jr. 160 Irving Ave. Hyannis Port, MA PS There is a silver lining. This eyesore located at 43 Iyanough will be a new landmark for sailors on the ocean for miles away. Maybe that’s a good thing for sailors, but not for Hyannis Port.
