HomeMy WebLinkAboutRobello Letter of OppositionTo: Barnstable Historical Commission I am writing with great concern regarding the proposal on your agenda for Tuesday, 8/19/25 regarding the alteration and relocation of what has for generations been fondly known as "the Ropes house". The historic significance of this property is well documented by David Churbuck and others. I disagree with the statement in the application that the move would make the building "a more prominent landmark". The historic significance is that it sits at the top of the hill, facing the harbor, and it IS visible from the street, and certainly visible from the shoreline. Yes, there is vegetation that limits visibility if driving quickly by heading out of the village or into the village passing it heading toward the beach. However, MANY villagers daily walk by in both directions and enjoy its steadfast presence, as do those out on the water. Speaking of which - this same property owner somehow got a permit to remove ALL of the vegetation further down the shoreline, leaving a barren "sand dune." That leaves me with little faith that the owner has any true concern for the preservation of the land or its buildings. Sadly, this feels like one more person "loving the area" who then changes everything they can, legally or not, and diminishes the character of our historic village. Please oppose this application and support the historical value of the property as it stands. Christine Robello Cotuit
