HomeMy WebLinkAboutA. Ford Letter of OppositionTo the Town of Barnstable Department of Planning, Zoning, and Historic Preservation,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the future of the
historic Ebenezer Crocker House located in Cotuit. As a longtime admirer of the cultural and
architectural heritage of Barnstable County, I feel compelled to advocate for the preservation of this
irreplaceable landmark.
The Ebenezer Crocker House is not just another building—it is a tangible link to our region’s early
history. The Crocker family were among the foundational settlers of Cotuit, and homes like this offer a
rare, authentic glimpse into 18th- and 19th-century life on Cape Cod. Its architectural details, historical
context, and contribution to the character of the village make it a vital part of Barnstable’s story.
I understand that the property has recently changed ownership, and that demolition may be under
consideration. I urge the Town of Barnstable to explore all available preservation options before
allowing such a significant piece of local history to be lost. Demolishing the Ebenezer Crocker House
would not only erase a connection to our past but also diminish the cultural landscape that draws
residents and visitors alike to Cotuit.
Whether through a historic designation, adaptive reuse strategies, or collaboration with local
preservation organizations, I am confident that a thoughtful path forward can be found—one that
respects both private property rights and the broader community’s interest in protecting its history.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter, and for your continued stewardship of
Barnstable’s historical and cultural assets.
Best,
Abigail Ford
