HomeMy WebLinkAboutHinkle Letter of OppositionDear Ms. Brown and members of the Historical Commission,
The thought of moving the Crocker house at 49 Putnam Avenue, Cotuit is both
horrifying and heartbreaking for me and my family. I spent every summer there until my
family got too small to keep it up. My husband worked hard in putting together the plans
for Ropes Field and on wording the language for the care of the field along Putnam
Avenue. The view of the house, from the road and the harbor, has always been a
landmark, now made more difficult to see because of the forest of trees along the
"beach road" which I believe were planted, or at least encouraged by the current owner.
The house and its location have been important in the history of Cotuit. Early owners
have been influential in the life of the village and the open space along Putnam Avenue
is an important part of its open feeling. This is the same family that has made Lowell
Baseball Park possible. Sprinkling parts of the house around makes absolutely no sense.
I will not repeat the well-written arguments I have seen against this proposal but hope the
wealth of history and appreciation will make it clear that the proposed changes are not at all
appropriate for maintaining the history and spirit of Cotuit.
Sincerely,
Sarah Ropes Hinkle
