Visibility and Compatibility Statement
Public Visibility:
Portions of the proposed work — including the retaining wall, cedar-framed welded wire fence, cedar
stockade fence, patios, and driveway improvements — will be visible from Harris Meadows Lane, a
designated public way within the Old King’s Highway Regional Historic District. New plantings will
partially screen these views, but the improvements will be discernible from certain vantage points.
Historical & Architectural Compatibility:
The proposed materials and finishes have been selected to maintain and reinforce the historic rural
character of the property and surrounding streetscape:
●Stonework (Delgado Ashlar veneer with Bluestone coping) reflects masonry textures and tones
historically found in Cape Cod landscape walls and garden features. The stacked stone look
matches the existing masonry on the property
●Cedar Stockade Fencing provides a traditional privacy boundary treatment, using natural
materials that weather naturally to a silver-gray patina.
Cedar-Framed Welded Wire Fencing offers a historically sympathetic containment solution with
an open appearance. The natural cedar frame and black welded wire mesh provide transparency,
preserve sightlines, and avoid the solid visual mass of more modern fencing styles.
●Hardscape Elements (Thermal Bluestone patios, crushed native stone drive surface, PaveStone
turf pavers, bluestone steppers) are muted in tone, non-reflective, and consistent with traditional
Cape Cod garden and driveway treatments.
●Plantings will be consistent with Cape Cod feel and fit into the neighborhood where screening the
house from view with beautiful plantings in the norm
●Lighting will be copper fixtures that patina into a classic look. All lighting is downward facing to
prevent light pollution
Scale & Setting:
All new elements are proportionate to the lot size, grade changes, and existing structures. The retaining
wall is aligned with natural contours to reduce visual bulk from the public way. Fence heights are kept
within traditional residential norms and will integrate with new and existing landscape plantings.
Avoidance of Incongruity:
In compliance with Section 10 of the Old King’s Highway Regional Historic District Act, the proposal
avoids exterior features that would be incongruous to the District’s character. The design employs
natural or traditional-appearing materials, maintains open sightlines where appropriate, and
complements the established aesthetic of the neighborhood.
Conclusion:
The proposed work maintains the visual integrity and historic character of the property while allowing
for necessary landscape improvements. The materials, scale, and siting are consistent with the Old King’s
Highway Regional Historic District’s purpose of preserving architectural and landscape heritage.
