I respectfully request that the Commission require the preservation and protection of the multiple significant mature trees currently located on the site as part of its review of this application. These trees contribute directly to protected resource area functions and interests, including storm damage prevention, flood control, groundwater protection, and water quality. Absent appropriate conditions, demolition and site-clearing activities may result in the unnecessary removal of mature trees, increased impervious exposure, and soil disturbance. These impacts would increase runoff and erosion potential and may adversely affect protected resource areas. Such impacts cannot be fully mitigated through post-construction planting. I therefore respectfully request that the Commission condition any approval to ensure that demolition and associated site work do not adversely affect protected resource areas or the interests of the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and the Barnstable Wetlands Protection Bylaw, by requiring preservation and protection of existing significant trees to the maximum extent feasible. Thank you for your careful consideration and for your continued work protecting Barnstable’s natural resources while supporting responsible development. Sincerely, Lori and James Day Wellfleet MA
