Dear Members of the Barnstable Conservation Commission,
I am writing to ask that the mature trees at 23 Pleasant Hill Lane be protected as part of your review
of the Notice of Intent for 23 Pleasant Hill Lane.
These trees are an essential part of the Pleasant Hill ridgeline and provide important ecological
benefits, including wildlife habitat, stormwater absorption, and protection of nearby wetland
resources. Their loss would permanently alter the character and environmental function of the site.
The protection of trees serves numerous enviornmental functions, including protection to water
quality, moderating extreme heat and anchoring of topsoil, which benefits water absorbtion and
protects against drought. We are learning more all the time about the small water cycles that buffer
an ecosystem from weather extremes, and protecting trees is no small part of getting these cycles to
offer local cooling, rather than adding to rampant climate warming.
I respectfully ask the Commission to require preservation of these trees to the greatest extent
possible and to include clear tree-protection conditions in any Order of Conditions issued.
Thank you for your work protecting Barnstable’s natural resources.
Sincerely,
Diana Di Gioia
Resident, town of Barnstable
