BUILDING FORM ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION see continuation sheet Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. The Samuel Childs house is a Mansard style building of two stories, similar to the Gifford and Crosby houses nearby, and probably built by the same builder. The plan is two squares, the rear offset a couple of feet eastward of the front one. On the north side is a large one story extension under slightly pitched roof, and a lower shed roof in the northwest corner. Both of these are on brick foundations of early date. The exterior is cedar shingle covered with grey vinyl clapboard, with white trim and maroon shutters. The window frames have an unusual triangular peak over the lintel, enclosing a four-leafed cross. The triangle theme is repeated in the interior lintel tops. Recent additions to the rear are an open deck, an exterior staircase to the second floor and two concrete block chimney outside the north wall replacing original brick chimnies. A screened porch extends across the front (east). The two hipped roofs are composition shingled. There are two outbuildings. The first, contemporary with the house, is a one story gable roofed barn to the northwest, roughly square in plan including a shed roof addition at the back. This is clad in natural cedar shingle, with composition roof. Built in the 1980s, lying directly west of the house is the second outbuilding, a tall boat shed of metal siding, gable end opening east, with a large shed roof extension on the south side. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE see continuation sheet Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) histo,y. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants pl ayed within the community. This house was built in late 1883, soon after the Crosby house immediately south, for oysterman Samuel9 H. Childs (1851-1919) and his wife Mary E. Jones (1857-95). This was the second of four Mansard houses given to his children by Williams Childs (Thomas?, Job6, David5-4, Thomas3, Richard2-l) of Little River, the pioneer of Cotuit oyster shipping by rail. If not built by local housewright Charles C. Bearse, it continues the French Empire style which he set for Cotuit(see "Sandanwood" 1863, LR 6). The house was built on 126 square rods on the west side of the West Road, as High St. was then known. In 1899 the Childses bought the lot running back to Neck Road. Samuel and Mary had two children, sons James Ernest of Kingston, and Alonzo Clinton of Chicago, to each of whom Samuel left 1/3 part of his estate. After Mary's death in 1895 he married Caroline W. Lovell (1871-1932). On his death in 1919 the house with two acres was valued at'$5500. His widow was declared legally insane in 1926, living in the care of Maud E. Wight of Sandwich. The property was in the care of her sister Bessie L. Fuller of Falmouth Heights. As conservator Fuller sold the house in 1926 for $8000. The buyer was Peter3 Campbell (1874-1942), and it has remained in the Campbell family since then. Peter was born in Roxbury, son of Patrick2 who had immigrated from Galway, Ireland with his parents about 1870. After working as a bookbinder at the Riverside Press Peter came to Santuit in 1895 to work at Hiram Cracker's dairy. Here he met Mary Edna Clark (1880-1985), a maid with Dr. Coolidge, whom he married in her hometown of Durham, Cape Breton in 1904. They had six boys and a girl. Peter worked in the Sears department store, then as caretaker for Harvard President A. Lawrence Lowell. Lowell sent two of the boys to Roxbury Latin School, and the older, (Joseph)4 Lawrence went on to Harvard and its Medical School to become a physician in Denver. See continuation sheet BRN.2526 INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET Property Address: 55 High st. , cotui t Samuel H. Childs House Massachusetts Historical Commission Area(s) Form No. HS-10 Massachusetts Archives Building 220 Morrissey Boulevard Boston, Massachusetts 02125 Town: BARNSTABLE Ira4 Louis (1909-69), the second son, followed his father as Lowells' caretaker, and inherited this house on High St. Ira married Ethel Smith (1907-97), daughter of William Smith, a textile worker who had immigrated from Manchester England, and Mary Jane Viera, an Azorean Portuguese. Here they raised one child, Laurie5, born in 1935. After Lowell's death in 1943, Ira worked for Camp Edwards fire department, then became superintendent of Mosswood Cemetery, then a private organization. Living opposite the fire station, the Campbells have a long been leaders of Cotuit Fire District. Peter was the first Clerk of the District in 1926-33; his fourth son Warren was Chief for seven years between 1941-52, with two of those years 1946-9 filled by Ira; fifth son George was Water Commissioner 1951-2. Laurie has served as Clerk of the Cotuit Fire District since 1977. Faced with housing shortage in World War II, an apartment was created at the back of the second floor, rented to Etta Crawford who taught at Cotuit School at the end of the street. An exterior staircase access was built in 1945. The original brick chimneys were replaced by woodstove chimneys in 1972 and 1998. In 1971 Ethel Campbell, Ira's widow, gave the house to her daughter Laurie and her husband Thomas W. Hadley (b. 1935), who retired as a Master Sergeant after 20 years in the Marines 1953-73, including a year in Thailand during the Vietnam War. Hadley was raised on the Clear Lake Duck Farm on Hamblin Pond in Marstons Mills, which his father and uncle had established. Tom operated the Crosby Yacht launch which takes sailors from Town Dock to their moorings in Cotuit Harbor, a service he continued after he bought the launch in 1996, which he stores out back. The Hadleys have two daughters, Suzanne6 (1957) who married Stuart Cabral, and Lynn (1958) married to John Shields of Hyannis, by whom she has two children, Brendon? and Colleen.
