RE: Barnstable – Pedestrian Improvements on Rte. 6A, from Rte. 132 to Old Jail Lane
MassDOT Highway Division Project Number 612980
Section 106 Review Section 106 Review – Early Environmental Coordination
Dear Committee Members:
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation, Highway Division (MassDOT) and the Town of
Barnstable propose to bring pedestrian improvements along Main Street (Route 6A) from the intersection
with Iyannough Road (Route 132) to the west to the intersection with Old Jail Lane to the east.
Project work will consist of reconstruction of existing sidewalks and curb ramp improvements if not ADA
compliant. Construction and installation of ADA compliant sidewalks and wheelchair ramps are being
proposed to improve pedestrian connectivity throughout the corridor. Road geometry will not change. It is
not anticipated changes to occur in the historic or aesthetic character of the project area.
This project will be supported in part with federal funds dispersed through MassDOT. The project, therefore,
will require review under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended (36
CFR 800). The enclosed project information is provided to the Committee to initiate consultation with
appropriate representatives of local government in compliance with the regulations governing Section 106.
MassDOT requests that the Committee review the enclosed materials at their earliest convenience. Please
submit written comments to: Carrie Lavallee, P.E., Chief Engineer, MassDOT, Highway Division, 10
Park Plaza, Room 7130, Boston, MA 02116, Attn: Jameson Harwood.
