This Committee meets monthly and is charged with recommending parcels of land for acquisition to the Community Preservation Committee (CPC); leveraging in conjunction with the Town Manager and the Town Council, funding other than Community Preservation Act funding, for purchase of land, reviewing conservation restrictions before Town Council approval, keeping the Open Space and Recreation Plan and open space section of the Comprehensive Plan updated and current, and implementing the approved Cape Cod Pathways Plan. Additionally, a member of the Open Space Committee serves as the Town’s representative on the Santuit Management Committee. OSC assists Town departments in the management of the Land Bank lands acquired under the Land Bank Act and its provisions. Starting point: Pogorelc Sanctuary, BLT Conservation Center, 1540 Main Street Celebrate the Town of Barnstable's Spring Walking Weekend and join Barnstable Land Trust with walk leader and ornithology educator, Tommy Burgess, to explore a local birding spot and take in the fresh morning air. This is on an easy trail that is about ¼ mile in length, and will include a number of stops and starts to listen and look for birds. Please bring binoculars. Event will be cancelled in the case of rain or severe weather. Registration is required at blt.org/events, and there is a limit of 10 participants. A New Route to the Beach in Hyannis Beginning time: 10 AM Approximate length/time to complete: 3.6 mi./3 hr. Starting point: JFK Museum (397 Main Street) Walk leader/contact: Doug Payson, capecodhiker@gmail.com Follow the Walkway to the Sea and the sidewalks along Ocean Street to the new multi-use path leading to Kalmus Beach on Lewis Bay in Hyannis. Parking available along Main Street in Hyannis and in the town parking lot behind the JFK Museum. Trayser Trail and Boardwalk in Barnstable Village Beginning time: 9 AM Approximate length/time to complete: 1 mi./1.5 hr. There are almost 200 caches on Cape Cod including 3 hidden at Barnstable Land Trust's Coombs Bog. Starting point: Parking area at end of Crooked Cartway Rating of terrain and pace: Flat/relaxed Directions: Take Route 149 (south from Rte 6, North from Rte 28) to rotary at Marstons Mills airport, west on Race Lane for 1.1 miles. Nice open views to the south. Will travel trails that were previously used as cartways. Now these paths are part of a large network of walking/multiuse trails maintained by the Town of Barnstable. - S U N D A Y , M A Y 1 7 - Lumbert Pond Ramble Beginning time: 10 AM Approximate length/time to complete: 1.5 mi./1.5 hr. We'll visit the forest and viewpoints along the pond. Exploring Fuller Farm Beginning time: 10 AM Starting point: The Michael R. Kramer Center at Fuller Farm, 995 Route 149, Marstons Mills Celebrate Barnstable's Spring Walking Weekend by joining BLT's Director of Land Stewardship, Kelly Barber, as you explore BLT's Fuller Farm in Marstons Mills. The trail is a combination of a short woodland loop overlooking cranberry bogs, an open meadow trail, and a new Holly Loop Trail through the Wheeler Holly Preserve.
