Our two sons were raised in the neighborhood and attended Barnstable public schools. The intersection of Juniper Road and Great Marsh is less than a block from our house. We are very concerned about the expanded intersection that has been proposed for Juniper and Great Marsh by the proposed Centerville Cove housing development. It is the worst possible location for a four-way intersection for two major reasons. One, it would create a very chaotic and unsafe traffic situation at the intersection. Two, it would incentivize using Juniper Road and Brezner Lane as a cut-through conveniently connecting Great Marsh with Phinney’s Lane, leading to a high volume of cars negatively affecting our neighborhood’s quality of life, pedestrian safety, tranquility, home values and the overall attractiveness and lifestyle we are all used to. In short, it would negate all the reasons we bought into the neighborhood and have lived here, happily, for so long. The neighborhood, consisting of single-family owner-occupied homes designed around a circular one lane road, was developed in the early 1960’s. The road was designed to be used primarily by residents. Although it exits onto both Phinney’s Lane and Great Marsh it is not a cut-through. Traffic, fast cars, engine noise, and honking horns have no place here and are not something we have had to worry about. It is a walking neighborhood used each and every day by residents for exercise, dog walking, mothers and grandmothers pushing strollers, and young children riding their bikes. Since there are no sidewalks it is paramount for everyone’s safety that vehicle trips on the road continue to be extremely low-volume. I know other commenters have suggested moving the intersection further east from Juniper Road; closer to Phinney’s Lane. I fully support that recommendation. Please do not ruin a beautiful neighborhood that has offered a high quality of life for generations of families.
