Help Us Protect What You Love
Protect this special place: stay on trails, leash pets, and carry out all trash.
Avoid trampling vegetation or disturbing wildlife—your footsteps matter.
Help preserve Sandy Neck’s beauty and biodiversity for future generations.
Marsh Trail Ecology & Habitat
Life Along the Marsh Trail
A Mosaic of Nature
Welcome to the Marsh Trail at Sandy Neck, where dunes, marshes, and forests meet.
This ever-changing landscape is home to plants and wildlife adapted to wind,
sand, and tides— explore with care and enjoy the beauty around you.
Great Marsh
You will begin at the edge of
Barnstable’s Great Marsh, a
vast tidal wetland where salt-
tolerant grasses
thrive. Ocean tides
flood and drain these
grassy lowlands,
creating a rich nursery
for fish, shellfish,
and birds. The
marsh acts as a
natural filter by
trapping sediment,
cycling nutrients,
and helping to
purify the water
that flows into
Barnstable Harbor.
Coastal Dunes
On the other side of the trail, you will see a landscape of
coastal dune habitat, where wind-sculpted ridges of sand
are supported by hardy shrubs and grasses that stabilize
the dune and buffer against coastal storms.
Look for these plants along the
coastal dunes:
• American beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata)
• Beach plum (Prunus maritima)
• Bayberry (Morella caroliniensis)
• Wooly Beach-heather (Hudsonia tomentosa)
Wildlife You Might See
Maritime Forest
Deeper inland, the trail
leads to a maritime forest, where scrubby
trees such as pitch pine, red cedar, and scrub
oak are sculpted by wind and salt spray. These unique,
stunted woodlands offer important nesting areas
for owls and songbirds as well as refuge for
animals like deer and foxes.
Look for these trees in the
maritime forest:
• Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida)
• Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana)
• Black Cherry (Prunus serotina)
• Scrub Oak (Quercus Ilicifolia)
Beach Plums
Prunus maritima
Eastern Coyote
Canis latrans x Canis lycaon
Eastern Cotton Tail
Canis latrans
Spadefoot Toad
Scaphiopus holbrookii
Look for these plants in the
Great Marsh:
• Smooth cordgrass (Spartina Alterniflora)
• Salt marsh hay (Spartina Patens)
• Sea Lavender (Limonium califormicum)
• Glasswort (Salicornia europaea)
Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodias

A Landscape That Moves
Sandy Neck is not fixed—it is alive and shifting.
Resilience here means working with nature, not against it.
By adapting today, we help protect this coastline
for future generations.
Building Coastal Resilience at Sandy Neck. Protecting Nature, Access and Infrastructure.
Key improvements at Sandy Neck A System Under Pressure
Rising sea levels and stronger coastal storms
are accelerating change at Sandy Neck.
These forces can lead to:
• Erosion of dunes and shoreline
• Flooding of trails and access roads
• Overwash, where waves push sand inland
• “Sunny day flooding” during unusually
high tides
Why Build Coastal Resilience?
Sandy Neck protects both natural ecosystems
and Barnstable Harbor.
To preserve this role, the Town of Barnstable
developed a long-term plan to:
• Adapt to changing coastal conditions
• Protect public access and infrastructure
• Maintain the beach’s ecological health
Coastal Hazards
Sandy Neck protects both At Sandy Neck,
natural coastal processes shape—and
sometimes threaten—the landscape:
• Storm Surge & Waves —Damage dunes
and flood low areas
• Erosion — Removes sand, weakening
natural defenses
• Overwash Events — Reshape the
barrier beach
• High-Tide Flooding — Occurs even on
calm, sunny days
Planning for the Future
A science-based planning process guided
decision-making:
• Vulnerability Studies identified at-risk areas
• Coastal Modeling tested future storm and
sea-level scenarios
• Design Evaluation compared hard structures
and nature-based solutions
• Community Input helped shape priorities
The result: a managed retreat strategy—moving
infrastructure inland to allow the beach to
evolve naturally over time.

Past, Present, and Future
Flooding at Sandy Neck
The original Gatehouse once stood here—
until repeated flooding and storm damage
led the Town of Barnstable to relocate
the structure to higher ground.
Understanding the Markers
Each line on this post shows either an
actual or predicted water level, measured
with the NAVD88 system. This system uses
a set ‘zero’ point in the U.S. to measure height.
It helps us compare past floods, current tides,
and future sea level predictions on
the same scale.
