HomeMy WebLinkAboutMcCarthy CommentsThis email is in regard to the COA proposed by 101 Maushop to the Old Kings Highway Commission for
consideration at the Commission's June 10, 2026 meeting. While not an abutter, my home's address is
Maushop Ave. and is accessed via a private roadway extending beyond Maushop, also called Offshoot
Road. As such, access to our home (along with the five other properties that jointly own Offshoot Road)
involves driving to the end of Maushop and turning onto Offshoot immediately after driving through the
break in the historic rock wall. I have an interest in the COA as it may adversely affect the safety of
accessing Offshoot.
The COA proposes a new driveway that would run adjacent to the rock wall which borders 101 Maushop
at the end of Maushop. This location is at the peak of Maushop and is also the peak of Offshoot. (See
picture). Entering/departing vehicles to/from Offshoot make tight, 90-degree turns at this intersection
with visibility limited by vegetation and the steepness of the hill on Maushop. Locating a second
driveway at 101 Maushop at this intersecting point introduces additional safety hazard. Further, there
already exists a driveway at 101 Maushop which is a short distance downhill on Maushop from the
peak. With the forsight provided by this distance, there is ample opportunity for vehicles leaving
Offshoot to observe whether there is any vehicle activity from 101 Maushop likely to affect vehicles
driving down (or up) on Maushop. The COA shows the existing driveway and also shows an existing large
parking area at 101 Maushop. The existing condition would seemingly provide for the access/egress
requirements of the other elements of the COA.
Given the existing conditions, there would be no need to introduce an additional safety hazard which is
further complicated by the fact that the driveway at 104 Maushop is directly across the street from the
proposed new 101 driveway. (See picture). The 104 Maushop driveway is mainly a blind driveway when
approached from Offshoot Rd. as it is blocked by vegetation.
Thank you for considering the comments.
