Tomorrow, Wednesday at Barnstable Town Hall! 7 pm Yes it’s finally here. Here we go. Please join us Wednesday night at 7 pm to see our Barnstable Zoning Board in action. Watch our zoning board do the right thing. This hearing is for one simple thing: Rescind a building permit that our Barnstable Building Commissioner never should have issued! A permit for Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC) to relocate a homeless shelter that has no business being relocated to 460 West Main Street. A permit that would devalue local home and business owners properties! A permit that will jeopardize the general welfare and SAFETY of over 2,500 school students and elementary school children! A building permit that does not even qualify merely because HAC and Catholic Charities claims they qualify under a scam loophole called the Dover Amendment! For the record, Barnstable High has 1,581 students. Sturgis West has 416. Hyannis West Elementary School has 297 and one local retired teacher from there reminded me that the Enoch Cobb Early Learning Center at the elementary school also has another approximately 180 pre kindergarten children between ages 3 and 5! I was also informed that the children here have a outside playground that for years had never had a need to be fenced but now? THIS is what matters! Why should our zoning board rescind the permit? For starters, one of our three very own town attorneys wrote a legal opinion on March 6th in which she opined (and rightfully so) that the potential issuance of a permit did not qualify for exemption under Dover! And yet, our town building commissioner still took it upon himself to issue that permit. What the hell gave a town building inspector the right to overstep the legal jurisdiction of a town ATTORNEY?! WHO gave this building inspector that authority?! And THIS, folks, is why we are here. THIS is the one simple thing we are all fighting for. Many of you have seen much of what we all know. The location is WRONG! The supposed ‘homeless program’ that HAC and Catholic Charities operates is a dreadful failure! HAC continues to justify and glorify its purpose and existence yet in October of 2024 our own county government gave them $ 3 MILLION in federal Biden ARPA funds and ZERO $ went to the homeless!! Zero. We’re talking about a permit that involves an idiotic location, a location amongst homes and businesses and in between four schools! This shelter should be relocated to the old now vacant Cape Cod Potato Chips Building in Independence Park! Away from homes. Away from businesses. Away from four schools. And yet still less than five minutes from the ‘services’ HAC touts its patrons require. A 75 cent fee on the local CCRTA gets one to his or her services in a flash. One last quick story: On Monday June 8th I was at Shaws on W Main Street handing out flyers to recruit people to come to the meeting. A young woman approached me with her 11 year old son who has autism. She told me that her son had gotten off his bus around 3 on West Main Street at the corner of Pine Grove Ave across the street from the Melody Tent and crawled out of the bushes with three hypodermic syringes! She was horrified and promised me she will be at this meeting with her husband! HAC = hello, HAC= hello? Anyone home? Anyone there HAC? Does HAC care ?! Nope they could care less. Recent police stats from Barnstable PD also revealed that Barnstable taxpayers paid for 805 police responses to homeless related incidents from April 2025 through December 2025! Easy math= THREE per day! Think that $$ could be better used on our school? On our roads maybe? Taxpayers have every right to be outraged. Enough is enough. HAC’s pitiful program needs to go! In conclusion, the appeal is being presented by Attorney Dan Creedon. Dan is one of the most brilliant zoning attorneys you will ever meet. He sat on our town zoning board decades ago with some former fabulous rock star zoning minds. The likes of people like Ron Jansen, Gail Nightengail and others. That board had over 100 years of experience and expertise so we are all truly fortunate and blessed to have Attorney Dan Creedon fighting for us all! We are in great hands! Please come one. Come all. Tonight. 7 pm Barnstable Town Hall 367 Main Street in Hyannis. Please join us to help in reversing insanity and send HAC and Catholic Charities to find a more suitable location for the shelter. And in doing so, they need to restructure their program because it’s been an F minus for decades! By John Julius
