Subject: Opposition to the Relocation of the Shelter to 460 West Main Street
Dear Ms. Brigham and Members of the Zoning Board of Appeals,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed relocation of the shelter to
460 West Main Street.
My opposition does not come from a lack of compassion or concern for those experiencing
homelessness. As a person of faith, I believe we are called to love our neighbors and help
those who are struggling. I support efforts to address homelessness in our community.
However, I also believe that solutions must be thoughtfully planned and located in areas
that do not create significant risks or negative impacts for surrounding neighborhoods.
What troubles me most is that research, community feedback, and the concerns of
residents appear to have been largely ignored. Residents have invested considerable time
attending meetings, reviewing information, and voicing legitimate concerns. To move
forward without giving proper consideration to those concerns is disrespectful to the
community and undermines public trust in the decision-making process.
One of my greatest concerns is the safety of children in our neighborhood. There is a bus
stop located at West Main Street and LaFrance Avenue where children gather every day
while waiting for school transportation. During the warmer months, many children look
forward to walking to and from school independently, something that has long been
considered safe in our neighborhood. Parents should not have to worry about whether their
children can safely walk to school or wait at a bus stop.
The proposed location is also in close proximity to schools, senior housing, and local
businesses. Before approving such a significant change, the Town should carefully
evaluate the long-term impacts on public safety, traffic, quality of life, and property values.
These concerns are not unreasonable, nor do they reflect a lack of compassion. They are
legitimate concerns raised by residents who live, work, and raise families in this
neighborhood.
I am also concerned that the current proposal continues a failed approach rather than
pursuing more effective alternatives. If the goal is to truly help those experiencing
homelessness, then the Town should be willing to consider better locations and more
comprehensive solutions that provide support while minimizing negative impacts on
surrounding residential areas.
I respectfully ask the Zoning Board of Appeals to reverse the building permit for 460 West
Main Street and require a more thorough review of alternative locations. The residents of
this community deserve a transparent process, meaningful consideration of public input,
and a solution that balances compassion with the safety and well-being of the
neighborhood.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Katia Regina DaCunha
