SUBJECT: Letter of Support 10 June 2026
To whom it may concern,
My name is Daniel Torres, and I am the Chief Operating Officer of Homeless Not Hopeless in Hyannis, MA.
I would like to express the steadfast support of myself and Homeless Not Hopeless of the relocation of Saint
Joseph’s Shelter to 460 W Main Street. Supporting the shelter relocation is the moral and ethical obligation
of Homeless Not Hopeless and of the Cape community at large. Over the past year homelessness on the Cape
has increased 119% and 26 fellow human beings perished in homelessness. Saint Joseph’s Shelter provides a
crucial life saving service to the community without which, people would die.
Saint Joseph’s Shelter maintains a robust and effective educational day program. Catholic Charities, who
operates the Shelter engrains itself in the motto of “Service Anchored in Faith.” To challenge the shelter’s
move is to challenge the command of Jesus Christ to “Love Thy Neighbor” and “Shelter The Homeless.” As
a community we must support organizations who make it their goal to do just that.
Any notion that Saint Joseph’s Shelter “kicks people out” during the day is entirely false. The shelter
maintains a day program which will be expanded with the Shelter and will once again, ensure people are not
kicked out during the day. Equally false is the notion that Sant Joseph’s Shelter recently created a day
program in response to the opposition. Furthermore, Saint Joseph’s guests do not present a threat to the
community. Currently where the shelter is located on Winter Street there is a school nearby and multiple bus
stops. There has never been an issue.
I truly hope that the community will find it in them to support fellow human beings. Too many people have
died in homelessness and opposing the shelters relocation would ultimately result in further death. Please
allow my letter of support be entered into record.
