Application for Certificate of Appropriateness
Dear Members of the Old King’s Highway Committee,
The proposed project includes a detached garage/ADU and coordinated exterior improvements
to the existing dwelling, designed to create a cohesive architectural composition while
respecting the character of the surrounding neighborhood.
The detached garage/ADU is a modest, subordinate accessory structure that remains visually
secondary to the primary residence. The structure utilizes a simple gable roof form with a
matching 7/12 pitch, consistent with traditional Cape Cod secondary structures. The massing,
proportions, and restrained detailing reference a traditional carriage house or secondary
outbuilding form.
Exterior materials have been selected to maintain consistency and reduce visual prominence.
The garage/ADU will feature cedar board-and-batten siding with simple trim detailing and a
muted dark exterior color palette. Garage doors are oriented away from the roadway, and
window openings visible from public view are limited in size and placement.
Architectural features include a coordinated mix of double-hung, casement, awning, and
transom windows with predominantly 6-over-6 simulated divided-light grilles and consistent
traditional detailing throughout. The roof is finished with architectural asphalt shingles in a
weathered driftwood blend, and exterior decks and railings are detailed in traditional wood
construction.
The applicant appreciates the Committee’s review and is prepared to make reasonable
modifications as needed to achieve an approvable final design.
