Greetings,
I am writing to express opposition to the planned homeless shelter at 460 West Main,
Hyannis.
Please understand that my opposition is specific to this proposed site and would
encourage selecting and fully support a less impactful location.
Homeless shelters by their very nature create a variety of problems for the surrounding
residents and business. With only overnight accommodation, and daytime discharge
rules, individuals turned away during the day can only lead to an increase in loitering,
wandering, and transience in the area. Additionally, a portion of the homeless population
struggle with mental illness and or drug abuse. First attracted by the support of the shelter,
then summarily discharged into the neighborhood daily.
This is a valid safety concern for all the surrounding businesses, in particular those
catering to families and children. They will be negatively impacted.
Moreover, homebuyers and real estate investors would see a nearby shelter as a liability.
This does suppress property value appreciation and discourage commercial businesses
from opening or expanding in the area.
Homelessness is a valid concern on the Cape. However, I genuinely feel the negative
implications of this location outweigh the benefit and respectfully implore you to select
another location.
Thank you,
Dave Nommensen
