Dear Ms. Brigham,
I am a neighbor of Edith (Deede) Tonelli and I live at 374 Plum Street in West Barnstable. I
am writing this letter in support of her ADU renovation at 1595 Main Street.
I have lived in proximity to this family in West Barnstable for over 22 years, on Locust Ave
and Plum St and I am aware of, and very excited about, their application for the ADU. This
renovation would provide a place to live for her daughter and son in law, which will then
enable them to work in Barnstable and support their mother with the 24 hour care of her
severely disabled son.
I understand the Old Kings Highway Committee already approved improvements to the
exterior and the footprint will remain the same. The renovation inside will make a livable
space for her daughter and son in law and they will keep the character of the existing barn.
I love Plum Street, its charm, its history and its character and I am thrilled they will keep
the look of the existing barn. Our street is highly unusual, as neighbors get together
for events, welcome new neighbors, helped each other through Covid, the blizzard last
year, etc. We even have our own illumination night on the Winter Solstice and everyone
gets together for food and drink outside. It’s from a time past, but we are keeping it alive!!
As well as being happy to keep our street's charm, this renovation supports the purpose
and intent of the ADU Bylaws' (#240-47.20 ) of greater diversity of multigenerational
families in the town. It also fulfills the goal of a more economic and efficient use of the
town housing supply, while maintaining its appearance and character, as there will be no
expansion or replacement of the existing structure.
If this ADU is approved, Deede will have the support of her daughter and husband a few
steps away, they will have a lovely place to live and the charm of Plum Street will remain
the same. I don't think there could be more of a win-win situation than that!!!
