INTENT: It is the intent of this section to allow the residents of the Town of Barnstable to operate a home occupation
within single family dwellings,subject to the provisions of Section 4-1.4 of the Zoning ordinance,provided that the activity
shall not be discernible from outside the dwelling. there shall be no increase in noise or odor;no visual alteration to the
premises which would suggest anything other than a residential use;no increase in traffic above normal residential volumes;
and no increase in air or groundwater pollution.
After registration with the Building Inspector,a customary home occupation shall be permitted as of right subject to the
following conditions:
• The activity is carried on by the permanent resident of a single family residential dwelling unit,located within
that dwelling unit
• Such use occupies-no-more-than 400-square feet of space. _
• There are no external alterations to the dwelling which are not customary in residential buildings,and there is
no outside evidence of such use.
• No traffic will be generated in excess of normal residential volumes.
• The use does not involve the production of offensive noise,vibration, smoke,dust or other particular matter,
odors,electrical disturbance,heat,glare,humidity or other objectionable effects.
• There is no storage or use of toxic or hazardous materials,or flammable or explosive materials,in excess of
normal household quantities.
• Any need for parking generated by.such use shall be met on the same lot containing the Customary Home
Occupation,and not within the required front yard.
• There is no exterior storage or display of materials or equipment
• There is no commercial vehicles related to the Customary Home Occupation,other than one van or one
pick-up truck not to exceed one ton capacity,and one trailer not to exceed 20 feet in length and not to
exceed 4 tires,parked on the same lot containing the Customary Home Occupation.
• No sign shall be displayed indicating the Customary Home Occupation.
• If the Customary Home Occupation is listed or advertised as a business,the street address shall not be
included.
• No person shall be employed in the Customary Home Occupation who is not a permanent resident of the
dwelling unit

Dear Ms.French:
Just thought I would drop,you a line in.regard to the subject I believe
we.are both concerned about,open space.My many early years perhaps
give me somewhat of an advantage as to where we were and where I believe
we are heading.Regardless .of.what the voters of our Town perceive,the
largest trade on the Cape has been building.Builders will continue to
build vherever an approved lot can be found.

I believe open space is an essentials component of any well designed,resi
dential development.Aesthetic pollution is as damaging to the future of
a community as water,air.and noise pollution.Aesthetic pollution is an
unpleasant sight and includes unsightly housing subdivisions.and .poorly
designed ccximercial buildings...Do you realize that any individual could
purchase almost any type of a building and place it on a lot adjacent to
your house as long as.it met zoning and building laws?Aesthetic pollution
vhich is present in.our daily lives,is recognized by some people,and is
unnoticed by others..You could simply say that this type of pollution is
a sight that is unpleasant.
It.is my opinion that we need to start.now to correct and prevent future
abuses.This way we can assure ourselves of orderly and more attractive
growth.
I have read that anyone \ho has ever been to Europe and walked the squares
of Florence or toured the parks of Paris and Geneva understands .the pleasant
aesthetic considerations,found there.The proper use of trees and European
type landscaping techniques are essential for proper community planning.
It is safe to say that we don't know the first thing about.building.We
the people and all other animals on this continent spend,our lives in utter
dependence on living green plants..They alone give us our.food.They alone
renew and.refresh the air.They alone heal man's earth wounds.. They alone
recycle our organic wastes.They alone store sunlight for our use.And,
how many realize this?

So you see,those of us who pave and build are helping to plunge the nation
into disaster^Architects,engineers,builders,pavers,realtors,developers,planning-and building officials.could be labeled public enemies,destroyers of
life.Our grandchildren will curse us for our blindness.
The real fact of life is that we have but a couple of choices,change the way
we build or disaster is the result.. I belieye that if we .act in time .with
less arrogance toward,the miracle called living land we can look forward to
a gloriously green countryside as I eluded to.
Open space is an.important factor in providing quality residential environ
ment of lasting value.
I trust that if.you are really,concerned with preseryii^the quality of life
as I see it,you will share your objections in a positive way by expressing
your views to the Planning Board*As a representative of the Town I am sure
you want.to join today to preserve our natural resources,to insure a better
tomorrow.
