To determine the design level.forces,the appropriate wind speed and ground snow conditions must be determined as prescribed by local jurisdiction requirements and applied in accordance to the 7th Ed. of the Massachusetts State Building Code. The Massachusetts State Building Code for One and Two Family Dwelling requires that wind loading be determined based upon Table 5301.2(4)Basic Wind Speeds and Table 5301.2(2)Component and Cladding Loads for a Building with a Mean Roof Height of 30 feet in Exposure B and Table 5301.2(3)Height and Exposure Adjustment Coefficients for Table 5301.2(2)of which replaces Unirac's Manual 227 Table 2 and Table 3 that follows ASCE 7-02/05 requirements. The Massachusetts State Building Code is dependent upon conditions of spatial form,height,exposure category and other structure parameters that are specified in the code provisions and illustrated in Figure 5301.2(8). For other building types not included by the Massachusetts State Building Code for One and Two Family Dwelling, the determination of basic wind speed should be determined by the 7th Ed. of the 780 CMR Massachusetts State Building Code that is referenced in Section 1604.10 and Table 1604.10 and replaces Unirac Manual 227 Figure 1.The determination of wind loading can be determined by Unirac's Manual 227 Table 2 or Table 3 using the aforesaid wind speed if the ASCE 7-05 Method 1 conditions are met. For determining the Total Design Load,the Unirac Part II procedure shall be replaced with 7 h Ed.'of the 780 CMR Massachusetts State Building Code, Section 1605.3 that has Load Combinations Using the Allowable Stress Design(ASD)for which the determination of distributed load on the railing,w(plf)and the uplift point load shall be Obtained for the selected use of railing.in Unirac Manual 227 Table 8 and Table 9. . The anchorage requirements for the installation are properly represented in the Unirac Manual 227 Table 12 that furnishes Lag Bolt pull-out loads(withdrawal capacities) in typical roof lumber(ASD). Review of Existing Roof Structure-Proposed Solar Panel Installation 60 Widgeon Lane-West Barnstable, MA Dear Mr. Perry, This office has reviewed the above referenced site for the purpose of reviewing the existing roof structure and to make a determination as to whether or nit it is structurally adequate to support a proposed solar panel arrangement. The following is a summation of our observations. There are a total-of 24 solar panels proposed for the southern facing section of roof. These panels have a footprint of 62.2" x 31.8" and weigh 33.1 pounds each. This translates into a unit weight of 2.5 psf(2.41) per panel. The 4 support rails have a minimal unit weight(.25 psf). The roof in question consists o62x8 rafters,spaced at 24" on center (with %" plywood sheathing) spanning approximately 13'-0' (on the horizontal).The ground snow load for Barnstable, based on the 7'"Edition of the State Code is 30.psf.This translates into a flat roof snow load of 23.1 psf(0,7 x Ct x Ce x Pg). Based on the weight and footprint each panel has an approximate unit load of 2.8;psf. It should be noted that the panels will not cover the entire roof area_ Based' on the properties of Spruce-Pine-Fir#2, the rafters can safely support a unit load of 36 psf. Assuming a dead load of 10 psf the rafters can support a live load of 26 psf which is approximately equal to the actual live load of 25.9 psf. In conclusion, it is my professional'opinion that the roof structure, in its present condition;is structurally adequate to support the additional load of the proposed solar panel layout.
