Dens, study rooms, offices, finished attics, sleeping lofts, and similar-type rooms are considered "bedrooms" according to the MA Department of Environmental Protection. (6) These variances expire three (3) years from the date of the variance decision letter. It is the applicant's responsibility to obtain a disposal works construction permit within the three_year period. These variances are granted because physical constraints at the site severely restrict the location of the septic system components due to the very small size of the lot.
