The strong horizontal lines of the building on both floors, the deep eaves, and the use of wood in the interior all carry marks of the style. Screened porch wraps around the east andnorth sides with \ shingled railing. The heaveyfront door to theeast has brass bossed nails, and i diamon paned window. Former tower SW of house was torn down in the fifties. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a Prairie Style house that is rare on the Cape and probably designed by a professional architect. The whole two story structure has the characteristic horizontal feeling of the Prairie type with strong lines across the front and deep eaves extending to the attic dormer. The exterior is shingle stained grey with white trim and gray-green shutters. Much of the original structure is unchanged by its four owners. The only in- consistent touch is newelled Victorian pillars on the back porch. Skylights in attic. Concrete block foundation with rectangular cellar furnace room below the kitchen. Service wing has 2 maids rooms above the kitchen with back staircase. Kitchen and pantry modernized about 1980 but rest of interior largely unchanged. At core of the house two massive fieldstone fireplaces back to back in living rooms and dining rooms. South side is three sided room with projecting eaves over cut-off corners. Downstairs rooms have open beams stained brown, hardwood / floors throughout and thewindows are wide with 2 large panes below and 8 above. Broatfd staircase has baluster boards with hearts incised, windows at (SEE ABOVE) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played 1n local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Henry P. Leonard (1870-1955) son of blacksmith Simeon Leonard (1819-1896) started to build houses in 1895 and by the end of his career had built many houses in the summer resort area of the village - Wianno, Seaview and East Bay areas. Most of them were for the wealthy off Cape summer residents. In 1907 he built this for Mary V. Mccartney on land he had bought in 1904. She was from Washington, D.C. and owned the property until 1942 when it was sold by the heirs of Mary V MccartneyNorton of Washington, D.C. (She had married Admiral Norton of Washington) Only three families have owned it since then. The present owners since 1979 are Attorney Alexander and Marianna Taylor of Bethesda, Md. DR. James Gould The criteria that are checked in the above sections must be justified here. The strong horizontal lines of the building on both floors the deepeaves, and the use of wood in the interior all carry marks of the style. Thus it gualifies for the National Register under criterion C.
