He would like some assistance. Response I myself and Lieut. Chase only in car 306. ,Upon arrival met Mr. Howard in the driveway. He led us to the backyard and there was a small hole on the i ;surface, but when you shine a light inside the hole appears to be quite deep. 1 used a shovel and made the whole wider and then I was able to determine that the hole in question is an old cesspool about 6' x 37 deep The honne is now on the Town of Barnstable Sewer system, and this cesspool was abandoned and was not filled in and the cover is missing. Short terin fix: 'We found a cement round sidewalk step, that is almost the same size as the abandoned 'cesspool cover'. We nut that over the hole in the ground, and the homeowner put some boards and a ;milk crate with weights ns extra protection tin top of the concrete cover. I. advised Mr. Howard that we will j. forward a copy of our report to the 'I'owu of Barnstable Board of Health. I also advised him that there ti)aybe more than one abandoned cesspool on the property, 1 also advised him that on Monday he should j ]tire an excavating contractor of his choice to fill in the hole.
