RE: Notice of Availability—A2 RAO
Diesel Release,Ocean Street Docks,Hyannis Harbor
Release Tracking Number 4-18819
This is to advise that an A2 Response Action Outcome report has been completed and is
available for review at the MA-DEP SERO office in Lakeville, Massachusetts. The report
includes an Immediate Response Action Completion Report (IRAC) as well as an A-2
Response Action Outcome for RTN 4-1 8819.
The IRA was in response to a release from a Cape Cod Oil Service delivery truck that was
making a regular delivery of diesel fuel to the Grey Lady, a high-speed ferry operated by
Hy-Line Cruises between Cape Cod and Nantucket, when the driver apparently had a heart
attack.and died. The tank then overfilled and an estimated 2,050 gallons of diesel fuel
spilled from the ferry's diesel tank vent pipe into Hyannis Harbor. The driver was found
by Hy-Line security personnel who shut off the delivery truck.
Response actions have removed the presence of product on the surface water. In addition,
16,198-gallons.of oil and water and 40 cubic yards of absorbents have been transported off
site for recycling and disposal. Overall sediment sampling in the harbor has indicated
levels of petroleum hydrocarbons within Massachusetts cleanup standards. A Stage 1
Environmental Risk Assessment has indicated no significant risk from sediment in the
vicinity of the site.
The source of the release has been removed and concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons
have been reduced to background or within Method l standards. Based on the response
actions conducted, the data collected and the observations.made at the site, an A-2
Response Action Outcome is being submitted for this-release.
