By Sean Gonsalves May 24,2011 2:00 AM I don't want to speak for everybody ... but I will. Of all the fast-food chains out there,Wendy's is the best, by far. Granted Mickey D's had me from day one and it will always have a special place in my heart and my arteries. But, if I put aside childhood psychological associations,Wendy's—especially the Wendy's in Hyannis—is the best of the big three. Hands-down. They have the best food;the most competent and friendliest staff;and the quickest service.The people who run the joint clearly know how to operate a successful fast-food franchise. But the owner and his legal entourage apparently don't have the first clue about actual traffic tendencies in the area. I say that in the warmest way possible. Nothing personal. Botsini Prime LLC,which owns the Wendy's property,and Ernest Smiley,the franchise owner, have been raising a fuss over the traffic plans associated with the neighboring airport terminal expansion project. Smiley even wrote a piece for this paper bemoaning the injustice of it all. Botsini Prime went so far as to sue the airport commission in Land Court, arguing that not only did the airport renege on a memorandum of understanding to put a traffic light on Route 132, but that the change of plans could put Smiley out of business. Closing arguments in the case were presented Monday. Out of business?To paraphrase the famous philosopher-actor Gary Coleman—God rest his soul—"Whatchu talkin''bout, Ernest?" The idea that Wendy's will be seriously harmed by the updated plan to create several new exits and entrances to the airport without a Route 132 light smells and tastes like 100 percent, pure,speculative nonsense. Anyone familiar with the Airport Rotary knows that it's one of the worst traffic choke points on the entire Cape.And it's a small miracle no one's been killed trying to make a left turn from Route 132 into Wendy's. People like me,who have been to Wendy's a million times over the years and will probably go a million more times, know that if you're heading east on Route 132 toward the rotary, it's always better to take the extra 20 . seconds or so to loop around the rotary, head back up 132, and turn right into Wendy's. In fact,even when I leave Wendy's I go out the back, into the existing airport exit to the rotary. I'd rather do that than make a right out of Wendy's onto Route 132,where it seems there's an endless stream of vehicles slingshotting out of the rotary,gas pedal to the floor. Smiley,who seems like a genuinely swell guy,wants airport officials to stick to their memorandum of understanding that called fora traffic light to be installed just up the road a bit,-near.the Sav-On gas station, thereby making that an airport access point. Airport officials have since decided on an alternative that scraps the light and creates a median strip, preventing anyone from turning left on that small stretch of Route 132.They should have done that 10 years ago, even without an airport expansion! In fairness to Smiley, it's a shame airport officials signed the agreement and then reneged. It doesn't speak well of the foresight of airport planners. But the real shame is that the idea of putting a light less than a quarter-mile from the most traffic-clogged rotary on the Cape was even floated in the first place. The notion that traffic going in and out of the airport will somehow discourage huge numbers of potential Wendy's customers is,well, laughable. What airport traffic!? Even with the expansion,we're not talking about Logan Airport or even T.F. Green. If someone sets out for a Baconator,they're going to get it. Period. Listening to Wendy's lawyers argue that airport traffic—some of which would undoubtedly patronize Wendy's—will discourage people from getting the best of the big three...well, you'd think the airport expansion project includes a plan to block Wendy's from people's view and require motorists to jump over monster trucks•to get into the parking lot.1t doesn't. Ironically,the times I've thought about going.to Wendy's but decided not to was precisely because I didn't want to deal with crossing Route 132,as it stands today. In fact, if Wendy's wins and they do put a light up on Route 132 between the mall and rotary, I'll probably avoid the area altogether. Of course, I did an informal survey of my rather extensive friends-who-frequent-Wendy's network and all of them had the same predictable but accurate response:Where's the beef? C'mon Mr. Smiley: Stick to what you do better than the rest and leave the traffic stuff alone.
