At the May 13, 1998 meeting of the Hyannis Main Street Waterfront Historic District Commission, an application submitted by Kevin Clover on behalf of Anthony Viola,Trustee,owner of 615 Main Street,was reviewed and approved. The application included signage and awnings. The applicant's intent was to re-cover some of the building's existing awning frames with black awnings with white piano keys across the bottom. Although the awnings which have been hung on the frames do match this description,the awnings do not have the appearance we expected. The rendering of the awnings which was included in the application (please see attached)show an awning that fits the frame on which it is mounted and which has a matte black finish. It was assumed by the members of the Commission that the awnings would be much like the awnings which used to hang on the building,except that the color would change. Therefore,we believed that the awnings would be made of canvas, would fit the frames, and would be properly mounted onto the frames. None of this is true of the awnings, as they now hang. We do not feel that the current look of the awnings is in keeping with the best interests of the Historic District or of the efforts of the Historic District Commission. The Commission feels strongly that these awnings should be removed and would appreciate any assistance you could provide on our behalf. Sincerely, V Richard . Page 1 encouraging pedestrian traffic may not be a good idea. D. Palmer requested that the capability to install sidewalks at a later date be included within the acceptance of this proposal. L. Chase noted that the state may be in the process of planning to redesign the highway and that sidewalks should not be encouraged at the present time. B. Burgmann noted that the state is not planning any changes for the road before FY 97 and it may be later now, with the new administration, and predictions on what work may be undertaken cannot be made at the present time. Lt. Chase noted that the Ridgewood Ave. corner entrance would need to be altered in order to accommodate emergency vehicles. The issues still needing clarification were: the dumpster; sidewalks; the sprinkler system; the compactor; the turning radius on the NW corner; landscaping; drainage calcs; parking lot islands; curbing details. Fire Department staff noted that the law requires a twelve foot clearance for the canopy and that they would need to be consulted about the landscaping. R. Crossen also advised the applicant to meet with the Zoning Enforcement Officer regarding signage for the facility. It was also noted that the entrance from Ridgewood Avenue must also be curbed. S. Bornstein assured the staff that he would be able to address the staffs concerns within the week. S. Bornstein stated that he would be willing to appear before the ZBA in order to obtain a permit for a sign for the facility if the franchise required signage beyond that which the ordinance allowed. T. McKean noted that he would research the dimensions of the existing grease trap in order to ascertain its capacity and ability to meet the requirements for the proposed restaurant. R. Crossen stated that only"rough work" would be allowed on the building for the time being but no building permit would be issued until the aforementioned concerns were all addressed.
