A portico with simple columns and doorway with side lights and wooden sculptured fanlight above are the buildings most distinctive architectural features. The windows are 6/6 except for the large single- pane window in a newer addition which faces Hyannis Inner Harbor. This two story addition has a garage at ground level. Several shed dormers have also been added through the years to increase living space. This is one of two properties once owned by David Hasckel;the other property is located to the south facing South Street. David Hasckel,a prominent member of the Jewish community, was married to Dora Pearlstein. The Pearlsteins lived in this house for several decades and also owned a clothing store on the corner of Barnstable Road and Main Street, later owned by Mr.Hasckel and renamed,Hasckels. The Historical Commission has determined that although the Hasckel House has some historical significance, the HAEDC's attempts to find someone willing to relocate the building are equal to the efforts and recommendations the Historical Commission would undertake in this case, therefore their determination is not to seek a six months delay but to allow the HAEDC to proceed with their efforts and failing relocation to raze the building. In conversations with Lanny Chase regarding this property,he indicated there was interest in looking at all the alternatives to demolition as well as demolition. Those alternatives included moving all or part of the building to another locus, leaving the original historic portion of the building on site and demolishing the later additions, and possible relocation/reorientation of the building on its current lot. In an effort to ensure that all of these alternatives are examined prior to final disposition of the building,we invite you to contemplate the following: It is not by accident that human interaction and historic buildings go hand-in-hand. Historic buildings were built with pedestrians, not automobiles in mind. They are built up to the sidewalk and have windows you can see through. Their entryways invite you to enter, not drive through. A historic building contributes not only architectural beauty to the environment, but a pedestrian orientation as well. Because they are often smaller in scale people feel comfortable walking in and around them. Public occupancy is one of the most effective public-sector tools for both historic preservation and downtown and neighborhood revitalization. The location of this building is ideal for adaptive reuse, perhaps as an information center/office for the HAEDC/Hyannis Chamber or several other opportunities. We hope the above information proves useful and that you will pass it along to whomever is interested in the building. incerely, Patricia And son Manager,HPD c Town Clerk Building Commissioner SENT BY: ; 3- 1-96 9:01AM ; 50877864484 1 508 790 6230;# 5 UNSAFE STRUCTURES, A BUILDINGS WITHIN THE HYANNIS FIRE DISTRICT SURVEY DATE; 2/1196 PROPERTY KNOWN AS: MAP; PARCEL: STREET NUMBER; 67 ADDRESS-OCEAN ST, 326 023 LAST KP40 IlN OWNER; H'YANNIS AREA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORP, HOMELESS PEOPLE STRUCTURE UNSECURED; PHOTO$ ON FILE: OBSERVED ON PROPERTY: Y N Y UNSAFE STRUCTURE LETTER SENT; N DOTES: UNKNOWN WHAT THE STATUS OF THIS BUILDING IS...
