Dear Mr. Bearse,
At your request, a preliminary site evaluation was performed
to evaluate , the type and placement of fill material used for
support of the raised ranch foundation. This evaluation was
performed on June 13, 1990 , in your presence by Olde Boston
Engineering.`
The proper replacement of debris fill, and organic decay
(original top and subsoils located approximately three feet deep)
under and directly adjacent to the foundation were of concern.
Four observation holes (# Is 1-4 ) approximately 8 ft. deep were
excavated around the perimeter of the existing foundation, 12-15
ft, from the foundation. One additional observation hole (#5 ) was
excavated 4 ft. from the west foundation wall. Holes 1-4 did
exhibit evidence of organic decay from approximately 3 feet to 4
feet in depth. Hole #5 did not exhibit any signs of an organic
layer. This appears to substantiate the builders claim that the
fill material was replaced under and directly adjacent to the
foundation.
The replacement material consisted of an "SW" type gravelly
sand with less than 5% fines according to AASHTO classification.
The replacement material, along with the remaining natural sandy
material, appeared to be moderately compacted in place, based on
visual observations since the actual placement and compaction
were not witnessed.
Although a lab analysis was not performed, the soil observed
was a medium compacted clean med-coarse sand and gravel. The Mass .
Building Code provides a presumptive bearing value for this type
of foundation material equal to 1-2 tons per square foot. This
appears consistent with anticipated loading of a single family
raised ranch structure. It should be noted that the entire
footing bearing area was not investigated due to concern with the
undermining of the footing.
