HomeMy WebLinkAboutCape Cod Commission CommentsMichael and Grayce,
As you know, I visited the 133 Gosnold Street property on April 7, 2022. The following are my comments on the building's architectural form, for consideration by the Barnstable Historical
Commission. I have not researched the building's association with significant people or events in Barnstable.
The building at 133 Gosnold Street in Hyannis has the form of a Four Square -- two stories with a shallow hip roof, wide eaves, and a roughly square footprint. The building also has
several Shingle Style architectural details -- woven shingle corners, a horizontal band between the first and second floor, and a flared shingle skirt above the band. Most of the existing
windows and window trim appear to be original. Based on these architectural features and similar structures in the region, this building likely dates from the very early 1900s. The
building does not appear on the 1910 Walker Atlas of Barnstable County, though a row of small building lots are shown along the south side of Front Street (now Gosnold Street) so its
construction may have been eminent.
In terms of alterations to the building, the front porch is likely not original based on the way the roof slope interferes with the trim band. A small enclosed ell at the rear of the
building was likely an open porch based on trim details and the change in foundation material. The bay window may also be a later addition to the building. The small roof dormer with
ventilation panel may or may not be original.
The building is approximately 100 years old and has had modest alterations. While the surrounding neighborhood does not have a consistent building style, nearby buildings are mostly
modest structures with a similar setback from the street. Some likely date from the early 1900s too, while others appear to be much more recent construction.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Sarah
