Mr.Myett,
As requested, I met with you at 147 Yacht Club Road to observe the proposed tally column
removal scheme. I evaluated the structure and offer the proposed changes shown in the attached
Sheets SK-1 and SK-2.
The columns and existing girder can be.removed after the temporary walls are erected on each
side of the girder up to the underside of the existing first floor joists. The new beam may be sized
to fit in beam pockets in the foundation or sized to fit within the wall to wall dimensions(22'-2")
and bear on columns at each end. The columns Will bear directly on the slab which is assumed to
bear on the foundation wall footing extension: The recommended girder replacement choices are
as follows.
1. An ASTM A-36 or better WIOx26. This beam is 10-3/8" deep and 5-3/4" wide and
weighs 572#. Add a 3/4"plywood nailer on top and the overall girder is 11-1/8" deep.
With joists at 881/2"off the slab,the headroom under the unfinished girder is 6'-5"
2. An ASTM A-36 or better W8x40. This beam is 81/4"deep and 8"wide and weighs 880#.
Add a 3/4"plywood nailer on top and the overall girder is 9"deep. With joists at 881/2"off
the slab,the head room under the unfinished girder is 6'-71h".
3. An ASTM A-36 or better W10x33. This beam is 91/4" deep and 8" wide and weighs
726#. Add a V plywood nailer on top and the overall girder is 10%2" deep. With joists
at 881/2"off the slab,the head room under the unfinished girder is 6%6".

This evaluation was performed assuming the subject single family dwelling was erected in
accordance with the Massachusetts Building Code in effect at the time of construction. It is
recommended that Phelan Engineering or suitable agent be employed to verify proper
construction. Please feel free to copy this letter to others as desired and call if you have any
