We live in the neighborhood proximate to the triangle of Scudder Avenue,Sylvan Drive and Pitchers Way,and my family has history here for nearly half a century.Over that time we've seen many families come and go, and many other dynamics, growth and changes in the Town as well. But on the whole, it's remained a relatively quiet, peaceful and good neighborhood to be. I write you because a new resident/family to the neighborhood at 65 Sylvan Drive has opted to keep chickens and rooster in their backyard.Nearly every single morning we are alerted and reminded of this as the crowing and "farm noises' begin, usually between the hours of 5-6am,as well as throughout the day periodically. Additionally shortly after their arrival,we documented never before seen Norway rats in our backyard, whereby after consulting experts and paying -$300 for pest control services, learned that rats and other vermin are often a result of these farm yard foul scenarios. We were advised that we should immediately discontinue use of our bird feeders as that additional source of food would only promote/attract the rats to our property. We have always enjoyed the wild birds that come through the area and my family has had bird feeders for the entirety of our time here without ever documenting rats. I understand that very soon after the new residents of 65 Sylvan arrived,at least one of my neighbors spoke directly with them about the disturbance the barnyard foul was causing, and was told that they would take care of the problem. For a short time after i this in 2017 the rooster noise subsided. But the rooster returned, and for most of 2018 and now again in 2019 we hear the rooster clearly in our home, every morning, with windows closed during Winter/Fall months, never mind in the Summer and Spring where we simply cannot open our windows without being disturbed by this consistent nuisance. I also understand that at least one neighbor notified the Animal Control department in Town with a complaint. I am not aware of the outcome of that matter. Honestly I'm quite embarrassed that I have felt the need to bring such a matter to you, however, with the effort and steps taken to date, I don't know what the next logical progression is to resolution. As a citizen and residents,we feel we have already done all that should be done to resolve. We are good people. We are peaceful, respectful neighbors, and simply want that reciprocated. personally believe Government isn't always the answer to citizens issues. But rather common sense, open honest discussion and kindness, respectful actions of your property, neighbors and neighborhood should serve us all quite well. Unfortunately, as they say, common sense isn't common, and all people are not kind and respectful, or at least not aware of how they impact others, even after being informed. This isn't agricultural farmland. It is a small parcel, residential neighborhood, with properties and homes that are very close to one another. I can't even believe that roosters and chickens are allowed by law in residential neighborhoods like ours. Frankly, the very idea is ridiculous. What's next? Can we have goats?Llamas?Alpacas? As an individual or family,if you wantto live a farm life, then you should go buy a farm, not a 1/3 of an acre residential property surrounded by numerous other similar sized private residences. I am not in the business of telling others, let alone my neighbors, what to do,but this impacts us,our family, and the enjoyment of our home and property, and I do not intend to spend another Summer season listening to the crow of rooster and rats in my backyard(which bring serious health consequences to our family, pets and guests). I respectfully ask your attention, assistance and prioritization of this matter toward a final and lasting resolution.
