PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2. 01 FUEL OIL STORAGE TANKS, PIPING AND ACCESSORIES
A. Furnish and install a vaulted above ground fuel
storage tank where indicated on the drawings and
as manufactured by ConVault. Tank shall meet the
following design criteria:
B. Steel Tank:
1. Steel tank shall be manufactured in
accordance with U.L. 142.
2. Steel tanks shall be rectangular in shape and
have continuous welds on all sides, inside as
well as .outside, conforming with the American
Welding Society Standard for continuous weld.
3 . Steel tank shall be pressure tested at 5 psi
for 24 hours.
4. Steel tank shall have 6" emergency vent as
required by NFPA 30.
5 . Steel tank openings shall be threaded, except
for rectangular detector tube. All 2" pipe
nipples shall be schedule 80 steel, 4"
nipples shall be schedule 40 steel.
6. Outer surface of steel tank shall be covered „I
by 1/4" thick insulating spacer panels of
polystyrene which melts on contact with
leaking petroleum products.
7. Secondary containment shall consist of a 30
mil, non-permeable, high density polyethylene
geomembrane enclosing the polystyrene spacer
panels.
8 . Steel tank shall be pressurized to 5 psi
until concrete sets to provide expansion
space between concrete and steel tank during
use.

9 . Steel tank shall be supported internally by a
minimum of two 6" wide beams.
10. No steel or insulating spacer panels in unit
shall come in direct contact with concrete or
any other corrosive material with the
exception of tank top opening which must be a
minimum of 3/8" thick steel pipe.
11. Steel tank exterior should be finished with a
rust preventative primer .
12. Tank shall have number and size of openings
as shown on drawings.
13 . Tank capacity shall be 1000 gallons.
C. Concrete Encasement:
1. Steel tank and secondary containment shall be
encased in homogenous layer of a minimum
5,000 psi factory poured reinforced concrete,
6" thick,, with no penetrating metal elements
except at the top.
2. Vault shall be of a continuous and visually
verifiable monolithic (seamless) pour on top,
bottom and sides of steel tank and contain no
cold joints or heat sinks (heat transfer
points) on bottom and sides.
3 . Vault shall have capability of physical
monitoring between primary and secondary
containment.
4 . Vaulted tank shall be tested in accordance
with UL Standard 1709 and shown to have a two
hour fire wall as mandated by the Uniform
Fire Code.
5 . Vaults shall have number and size of openings
as shown on drawings.

D. Installation, Compliance and Other Specifications:
1. Unit shall have concrete exterior, finished
with protective epoxy coatings.
2. Unit shall have exterior warning signs of
proper location and configuration to meet
applicable code requirements.
3 . Unit shall be approved for Phase II balance
recovery.
4. Vaults shall have concrete support legs of
unitized monolithic construction. Unit shall
be placed on a foundation of reinforced
concrete pad.
5. Tanks shall have . seven gallon overfill
system, UL listed, with internal reservoir
and normally closed UL listed drain port.
6. Earthquake restraints shall be installed
where required by local jurisdictions.
7. Vaulted tank design shall have been in
manufacturing production and commercial use
for a minimum of five years.
8. Tank and concrete vault shall be finished as
one unit at factor and require no assembly, .

construction or completion at installation
site.
E. Tank assembly shall have a . thirty year
manufacturer ' s warranty.
F. Tank package shall be provided with diesel package
with suction tube.
G. Fuel Oil Piping and Fittings:
1. Furnish and install all fuel oil supply and
return piping, vent piping, gauge lines and
make all connections indicated or required.

manufacturer and licensed by state if
applicable. The piping system shall be
complete with all the necessary check valves,
gate valves, filters, fusomatic shutoffs and
emergency switches as required by state and
local codes. Test all fuel oil suction and
return lines. Suction lines shall be air
tested at 100 psig and 22" vacuum for four
hours. If any leaks develop, repairs shall
be made and tests repeated until leaks are
eliminated. All tests are to be made prior
to connection to fuel oil tank.
2. Above ground fuel supply and return piping
shall be type K copper with flared fittings.
Piping located exterior of building shall be
completely encased in individual 3" `
galvanized schedule 40 steel piping with long
radius elbows.
3 . Fuel oil storage tank vent piping shall be
galvanized schedule 40 steel and shall extend
a minimum of 12 ' -0" above grade. Vent pipe
shall terminate with a cast aluminum bodied T
type vent cap which emits a whistle until •
fuel level closes off the extension tube.
Emco Wheaton Model A634 or approved equal.
4. All pipe shall be installed to allow for
expansion without excessive stress on pipe,
hangers or the building structure.
5. Any steel piping shall have .standard screw
joints. Install swing joints as required.
All screwed joints shall be made tight with
tef lon tape.
6. All piping shall be cut accurately and
installed without springing or forcing and .
shall properly clear all building components.
Steel piping shall have burrs removed by
reaming: and shall be installed to permit free
expansion and contraction without damage.
Horizontal runs of vent piping should be
avoided whenever possible.
