Paul Roma, Building Commissioner �-r+ Town of Barnstable 200 Main Street Hyannis, MA 02601 Subject: Reconstructed Antique Barn Frame for John Squibb: 3795 Main Street, Barnstable, MA Dear Mr. Roma, I was retained by John Squibb to provide structural engineering services for the subject project. The original antique barn frame is a 28' x 30', 1 '/2 story post and beam structure which Mr. Squibb proposes to relocate from New Hampshire to the subject site. Mr. Squibb is working with J. Scott Campbell of Maine Mountain Post and Beam to source the antique frame. Per Mr. Campbell, the member sizes of the antique frame are as follows: "There are four bents in the frame on 10' centers. Ties are 7x7s with posts below. Loft joists (half rounds'6x6) were laid over the ties (not morticed) on—two foot centers. At each bent there is a major rafter 6x7 with a queen post(-6x6) at the same layout as the post below the tie. Between the "major"rafters are common rafters 3x5 on 3 foot centers." It is my professional opinion that these components are appropriate for the proposed re-use, especially considering that the snow loads on the structure are likely to be considerably lower in its new location that they were in the Granite State. The roof and loft framing will be re- used on top of a new foundation and first floor structure. As an addition to the antique barn frame, Mr. Squibb proposes to build a shed roof structure 14' wide on two sides of the original footprint.
