At the he of September 22, 2010, the Committee requested that the blue signs that were presented in your application be replaced with signs with a white background and black lettering. We are not sure why this has not been done in a timely manner; however, it is important that signage be in place prior to the tourist season, lest we go one more summer without proper identification for these historic sites. The Lothrop Hill Cemetery is a destination for not only numerous descendants of John Lothrop, but for many visitors to the Cape interested in genealogy history. We are wondering what the status of the signage is? Are there plans to provide signage that have black letters on white background, and if so, what is the time frame for their installation. Old King's Highway has requested that all town signage in the historic district be black lettering on a white background and that remains our preference. Thank you for.your attention to this matter. Please feel free to contract me if you have any questions. The Town Barnstable DPW(Cemetery and Ground Services) installed the aforementioned signs without obtaining a Certificate of Appropriateness from the OKH. An application was subsequently received from the Cemetery&Ground Service and a public hearing was later held on September 22, 2010 to: "Install Double Sided Signs at the following 2 Locations: Cummaquid Cemetery, ,gAb0'Mary Dunn R o_ad---Lothrop Hill Cemetery, 2801 Main Street, Barnstable" The OKH concluded that the.post and design of the signs was appropriate however the signs were to be painted with black lettering on white background, similar to the longstanding previously approved.cemetery signs that were removed. The signs that were removed were installed by Paul Casson, former Supervisor of Structures & Grounds, and received a Certificate of Appropriateness from the OKH. The OKH has had an agreement with the DPW that signage within the OKH will be black lettering on white background for over 20 years. Notwithstanding that agreement,we expect. enforcement of this issue before any other cemetery signs are erected within the northside historic district i.e.,Cummaquid Cemetery, Cobb's Hill East and Cobb's Hill West Cemeteries, &Sandy Street Cemetery. In addition the OKH has yet to receive an application regarding the Crocker Park Cemetery sign erected without a Certificate of Appropriateness.
