Glowacki and Sons and Structures Unlimited for solid waste and waste oil management violations Tuesday Posted Jun 15,2010 at 12:01 AM Updated Jun 15,2010 at 3:11 PM Nantucket company agrees to perform a $14,280 supplemental enviornmental project for Nantucket after being fined by the Mass Department of Environmental Protection. By Staff reports The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection fined Walter J. Glowacki and Sons and Nantucket Structures Unlimited $4,760 for solid waste and hazardous waste management violations at its 20 Davekim Lane facility on Nantucket. Together, these two entities own and operate Glowacki Construction, a landscaping, salvage and general contracting operation, as well as an asphalt manufacturing operation at the site, according to a press rlease from the state Department of Environmental Protection. The press release further stated, "MassDEP inspected the facility and found that the companies were storing demolition debris without having obtained the required site assignment to operate a solid waste handling facility from either the state or the local board of health. MassDEP also determined that Glowacki had not fully complied with a 2004 consent order by not completely removing all of the junk vehicles,vehicle parts and other solid waste from the site. Under this SEP, Glowacki will conduct street sweeping services for the Sconset area of Nantucket involving two sweepers/operators, two laborers and two dump trucks. The Town of Nantucket will use the street sweepings (sand) as landfill cover, a scarce and expensive commodity on the island. This will help the town defray its costs. "'Glowacki has a responsibility to operate its facility in compliance with environmental regulations, and to protect the groundwater, which is a sole source aquifer on Nantucket,' said David Johnston, director of MassDEP's Southeast Regional Office in Lakeville,'This is the second consent order with Glowacki established to reach this goal.
