At the time of my inspection the trenches were excavated in the 4th wing, south, east and north walls and 5th wing at the south and east walls (Foundation Plan Right). Foundation forms have been placed in the center section at front entry. Soil was excavated beyond subsoil to uniformly graded sand with stone. The areas appeared well compacted with no trace of organic matter. Top 1-2" of sand is dry and loose. I suggest the dampening of soil just prior to placement of concrete. All observations were reported to the project superintendent prior to leaving the site. Technician: Mark Liebert Approved v a FRICG 7 Briggs Engineering & Testing p D NilA DMsioN of PK Assom BS,INc. July 13, 1998 5215 Old Orchard Road Project No 82706 Suite 700 Skokie, IL 60077-1045 RE: Whitehall Estate, Whitehall Way, Hyannis, Ma Daily Geotechnical Field Report for July 6, 1998 At the request of John Feeny of Congress Construction, the undersigned Geotechnical Engineer visited the Site to observed foundation subgrade conditions. The results of the visit are discussed as follows: BUILDING AREA EXCAVATIONS The undersigned engineer witnessed the excavation of fine to coarse sand with a trace of silt and gravel from the proposed footing area along the northeast part of the proposed building area. Refer to the attached sketch for location. The excavation extended to firm stratified fine to coarse sand subgrade. The virgin subgrade sand was disturbed to a depth of approximately four inches or less by the 'excavation. The subgrade was immediately compacted by making approximately four passes using a large hand operated, self propelled vibratory plate compactor. The subgrade was firm and stable during the compaction. Approximately 12 to 18 inches thickness of subsoil was excavated from the proposed slab area in the northwest part of the building as shown on the attached sketch. The excavated subsoil consisted of a silty sand with a trace of gravel and several roots. The excavation extended to virgin, stratified sand with a trace of gravel and silt. The subgrade was observed to be free of organic matter including roots. Very truly yours, BRIGGS ENGINEERING &TESTING A Division of P Associa s,Inc i 4 vid Geisser Paul M. July 24, 1998 5215 Old Orchard Road Project No 82706 Suite 700 Skokie, IL 60077-1045 RE: Whitehall Estate, Whitehall Way, Hyannis, Ma Daily Geotechnical Field Report for July 21, 1998 At the request of John Feeny of Congress Construction, the undersigned Geotechnical Engineer visited the above site. to observe the foundation subgrade conditions and perform compaction testing of backfill. The results of the visit are discussed below: BUILDING AREA EXCAVATIONS The undersigned engineer observed the previously excavated footing trench along the east and south walls of the proposed building. The excavations extended to firm stratified fine to coarse sand with a trace of silt. Refer to the attached sketch for location. BACKFILLING AND COMPACTION An initial lift of gravelly sand was placed prior to the site visit. The fill was consistent with the soil sample collected by the contractor from the right (south) side of the site. The lift extended approximately eight inches above the footing grade. The fill was compacted by making approximately five passes by a large vibratory plate compactor during the site visit. The fill was firm and stable during compaction. Tests #1 and #2 revealed adequate compaction in excess of the required 95% minimum. A second lift of the gravelly sand was spread over the initial lift and similarly compacted. These results meet the required minimum of 95% compaction. Tests #3, 4 and #5 revealed low moisture and inadequate compaction. The area was further compacted however, the percent compaction did not increase. Briggs recommended wetting the soil and further compacting until the required 95% compaction rate is achieved. The Contractor is scheduling the connection to municipal water and plans to wet the area after water is available. The Contractor stated that they would contact Briggs for future testing of the fill layer once water is available. Refer to the following table for soil density testing results: 100 Weymouth Street-Unit B-1 100 Pound Road Rockland, MA 02370 Cumberland, RI 02864 Phone(781)871-6040 9 Fax(781)871-7982 Phone (401)658-2990 9 Fax(401)658-2977 t Excel Corp. The fill was delivered to our laboratory and labeled as being sampled from the left (north) and right (south) sides of the site. These samples were submitted for sieve analysis and Proctor (maximum dry density) testing. The test data was submitted under separate cover after testing was complete. The above max. dry density value represents the material sampled from the right (south) side of the site. It should be noted that this material did meet the project sieve specification for structural fill. Memo:Jan, Attached please find the revised sieve &proctor data from the two samples of site material provided to us. The specification requirements for structural fill are now shown on the data sheets. You should note that Sample M-3347 was described to us as being sampled from the left or north side of the site. Sample M-3348 was described to us as being sampled from the right or south side of the site. The sampling was performed by others. As discussed on the telephone, Sample M-3348 falls short of meeting the specification requirements for structural fill by 2% on the No. 50 sieve screen. In light of this, we must retract the last statement in our letter to you dated July 24, 1998 which stated the material did meet the spec. While we feel the material is still suitable, Gary Kane has indicated he would be more comfortable having his Geotechnical Engineer review the attached data to determine if it should be used as structural fill. The results of the visit are discussed below: BUILDING AREA EXCAVATIONS The undersigned engineer observed the previously excavated footing trench along the northwest and northeast parts of the proposed building footprint. The excavations extended to firm stratified fine to coarse sand with a trace of silt. Refer to the attached sketch for locations. SOIL PILES The undersigned engineer observed soil piles located on the south and central part of the site. Piles of topsoil and subsoil are located in the southwest area within or just outside the building footprint. Piles of gravelly sand exist in the central and east parts of the building area. These piles contain some of the finer sand with little gravel. This soil mixture is intended for use within the building up to the bottom of the final lift of fill in accordance with the recent recommendation by Geotechnical 100 Weymouth Street-Unit B-1 100 Pound Road Rockland, MA 02370 Cumberland, RI 02864 Phone(781) 871-6040• Fax (781)871-7982 Phone (401)658-2990•Fax (401) 658-2977 Whitehall Estates, Hyannis, MA Project No. 82706 ALl-ust 5. 1998 Site Visit Page 2 of 2 i Consultants. A sample of the soil mixture was collected by Briggs for laboratory sieve analyses and Proctor. A large pile of gravelly sand exists near the northwest part of the proposed building area. This soil is consistent with the Structural Fill on site soil removed from the footing excavations. It should be noted that the soils observed on the exposed surfaces of the piles are dry. This soil will likely require moistening in order to achieve the required compaction if used as fill. Varying blends of on site soil mixtures exist at the site. Gary Kane of The Architectural Team, Inc. has expressed concerns that the soil compaction be monitored and tested closely. Briggs recently completed a Proctor test on the gravelly sand soil mixture which is being utilized as fill in the proposed building area. The undersigned engineer visited the site to witness placement and compaction of the fill and observe the compaction testing by our filed technician. One lift of fill was observed placed and compacted during the site visit. The fill was spread 8" thick and was compacted by making four passes by a large vibratory plate compactor. The layer was then tested. Soil moisture at 5% and compaction at 96% was measured. Given the observed compaction methods and reported optimum moisture content, the soil mixture being placed as fill today appears consistent with the sample recently Proctor tested. 100 Weymouth Street-Unit B-1 100 Pound Road Rockland, MA 02370 Cumberland, RI 02864 Phone (781)871-6040 a Fax (781) 871-7982 Phone (401)658-2990•Fax (401)658-2977 f Whitehall Estates, Hyannis, MA Project No. 82706 ' AuRust 12, 1998 Site Visit Page 2 of 2 a Additional Proctor testing does not appear warranted at this time.
