The.static charges which build upon the tester'are monitored continuously by a recorder. A neolite shoe sole has been chosen as the primary reference material because its static performance is much like.that of many common leathers. 'it is a commonly used shoe sole material and can be easily cleaned,.while its chemical and physical properties are_cluite uniform. A chrome, tanned Leather shoe sole has been chosen fora secondary'.reference material because it is representative of a certain :lass of leathers whose performance differs significantly from that of neolite soles on certain carpet fiber. .Statistically, chrome tanned leather comprises a very small percentage of.the shoe sole market,,but must be considered in critical applications. The ASTM E-84 Test Method subjects materials to limited fire conditions When tested in a horizontal ceiling application. The test results may not Indicate the material ' s actual burning characteristics when field installed in a vertical position. Also, the sample mounting prescribed in this test method may not produce a fire behavior representative of actual building fires . Factory Mutual Research personnel did not witness the submitted products being manufactured; therefore, this test program is considered an exploratory evaluation. Tests were conducted in accordance with the Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, ASTM Designation E-84 (87) . The results yield flame spread and smoke density values for the test materials during a 10 minute fire exposure. The purpose of the test is to determine that comparative surface burning characteristics of building materials by evaluating the flame spread performance of red oak under identical conditions. The smoke density value of the material arbitrarily established as 0 and 100 respectively. •II MATERIALS TESTED The client supplied the following descriptions of the panels: FR Polyester Panels Test S.- .090 Kalite e GP. IV LABORATORY RESPONSIBILITY The Factory Mutual Research Corporation makes no, jud.gement of product uniformity solely as a result of this fire test evaluation. Product uniformity depends in part on manufacturing facilities and quality control procedures. Factory Mutual Research' s Audit Inspection and Re-examination Program provides a means to assess these conditions. . Factory Mutual Research makes no judgement of product suitability for its intended end-use based entirely on ASTM E-84 test results. This test method for the comparative surface burning behavior of building materials is appli:able to exposed surfaces, such as ceilings or walla, provided that the material or assembly of materials,by its own structural quality or d;,e manner in which it is tested and intended for use,is capable of curporting itself in position or bcing supported dung the test period. These tests are conducted with the material in the ceiling position. The purpose of this test method is to determine the relative bums ng bcbavivr of the material by observing the flame spread along the specimen. Flame Spread and Smoke Developed index are reported. However, there is not nec 4warily a relationship between these two measurements. For each test, a sFe.imen measuring at least 21 ift, wide x 24 A long is required. The specimen may consist of a conti°.uolrs, unbroken length,or of sections joined end-to-end- When requested by the Client, specimens are prept-red at SwPJ following the Client's instructions. Unless otherwise indicated by the Client, test specirrte-r.s are conditioned as appmpriare.in an atmosphere m. ntained betwecu 68 and 78OF and 45 to 55%relative,humidity. Immediately prior to the test, the specimen is mounted in the furnace with the sid:to be tested facing the test flame. 50.i timcs, because of the nature of the material undergoing testing, additional support(e.g.wire,wire and reds,rods,and/or bars)is used to ensure that the specimen will remain in position during the test. Tn.' use of supporting materials on the underside of the test specimen may lower the Flame Spread Index frorn that which nught be obtained if th.c ipe-nimen could be tatted without such suppori, and the test result!: do not necessarily relate to indices obtained by testing materials without such support. The flame front pcsition and light obscuration arc recorded throughout the 10-minute test and used to calculate the Flame Spread and Smoke Developed indices. The temperature at 24 ft is also recorded. The Flame Spread and Smoke Developed indices reported herein are relative to the results obtained for mineral fiber-:trinfomed cement board And select grade rend vale(moisture content between 6 and 8%). The mineral fiber-reinforced cement board is the calibration material used to obtain 0 values for Flame Spread and Smoke; red oak decks are u."to obtaui 100 values for Flaa-ne.Spread and Smoke. 7i a rest:lts apply spociftc:ally to the specim:ns tested, in the manner tested, and not to the entire production of these or sitnikx materials, nor to the performance when used in combination with other 111atcrials. $ 11715 standw-d should be used to measure and describe the response of materiALs,products, or aswinbilt*to heiuN and flame under controlled conditions and should not be used to describe or appraise the fire-&yard or five-risk of materials, produce,or assemblies under actual fire conditions.
