Minutes
Kris Clark mentions that the Hyannis Chamber of Commerce, at an event they hosted, had “trails” listed as one of the
perks of Barnstable. She thinks it may be worth starting a conversation about partnering up with them to potentially get
financial support for a project like this, which would also help tourism.
Alicia Messier says that the West Barnstable Fire Chief and Ed Hoopes are trying to do a comprehensive remap of the
West Barnstable trails right now, including GPSing bridges, kiosks, benches, signs, fallen trees, etc. along the trails. They
are also considering updating blaze colors because they are inconsistent, among other issues. Over the years, the trails
have been mapped by different methods and groups and it has become difficult to understand the details and track
changes. There has to be a balance of public function and emergency when it comes to signage/blazes. Alicia suggests if
LAPC members want to understand how emergency services work in regards to trails, they should contact the West
Barnstable Fire Chief. Kris Clark says she will ask the Fire Chief to include her in this conversation moving forward.
Farley alerts Alicia that she had put in a request to Americorps to reblaze part of the red trail in West Barnstable. Alicia
requests that Farley include Ed in that conversation. Farley says she is collaborating with Asset Management on it too.
Kris provides background for Alicia about the Walking Library project. Each walk should have distance, time to complete,
degree of difficulty of terrain, directions to trailhead, village, brief description, restrictions, and a map that will take you
back to your car. Kris wonders if each trail or map should include parking information too. Alicia wonders if maybe the
Walking Library trails can have their own color distinction or symbol in order to differentiate from other existing trails.
Members think that is a good option. It is also determined that Conservation should be included in the Walking Library
process because they are in charge of maintaining the trails. Alicia will talk with Kevin DeCollibus, who manages the
website, about if an integrated sorting option is possible. Kris assigns a relaxed deadline of spring for a Walking Library
draft.
Alicia says Farley should forward the trail information she gathered on Gaia to Conservation.
Everyone discusses the holes in the red trail and what to do about them. The parcels may be under new ownership and
it may be worth seeing if the new owners would be open to an easement or conditions, or may not know about the tax
breaks that come with that. Maybe Jim or Dave Anthony would know more.
LAPC members discuss dates for the spring Walking Weekend and land on the weekend of May 5-7th.
