THIS MONUMENT WAS PRESERVED r . _- r'a+.. :: ✓ate '; C i t t( y1 e u Mu , -- MV2 MIA .at 1717 WEST PARISH MEETINGHOUSE WEST BARNSTABLE, MASSACHUSETTS But for the efforts of Miss Elizabeth Crocker Jenkins and the devoted men and women who joined her in the nineteen fifties to form the West Parish Memorial Foundation, Inc., the 1717 Meetinghouse in West Barnstable, oldest Congregational Church in America, might now be a ruin instead of a glorious inspiration. a. Now We Can Save Another Heritage 4: . "THE OLD PARSONAGE t Ahead lies the challenge of restoring the .Jenkins-Shaw Homestead c. 1683 on Church Street, West Barnstable, Miss Jenkins' former home and the birthplace of Massachusetts Chief Justice Lemuel Shaw, that it may stand as a proud monument of the past and a worthy dwelling place for the ministers of the West Parish Congregational Church for years to come. i TO MAKE THE HERITAGE A HOME . r u I• _ V, — !` ^ II 'II fllA - =mrttaa- ,=_J_~--` — I •. j1 rr — ., Corr; ' „ =. IC -- , - The restored parsonage will look like this 1 THE STORY OF THE JENKINS -- SHAW HOMESTEAD The Old Parsonage, one of the most distinguished homes on Cape Cod, was built by settler John Jenkins before 1683. It was passed on to his son Joseph- and to Joseph's son Benjamin. In 1763 Benjamin sold it to the Reverend Oakes Shaw, who used it as the parsonage during his 47 years as pastor of West Parish. Here in 1781, Lemuel Shaw, later Chief Justice of the Supreme, Judicial Court of Massachusetts and one of the great jurors of America, was born to Pastor Shaw and his wife Susannah Hayward. As the years passed, the Old Parsonage fell into disrepair ' until, in 1914, Miss Elizabeth Jenkins, descendent of the builder, bought it. In 1921, she took residence there and once again it became a well-kept dwelling and a center of life of church and community. Since Miss Jenkins' death in 1956 when her home was 1 bequeathed to West Parish, it has served as a parsonage for the ministers of the West Parish Church. Now the lovely Colonial structure is in need of repair and improvement in order to provide the features essential for today's comfortable and convenient living. 1 NEEDED — REFU'RBISHMENT AND ADDITIONS Although the basic structure is sound, replacement of roof and . foundation timbers, reshingling, repainting and repairs of doors, windows, stairways, and a new furnace are needed. Two additions are proposed - a bedroom and bath, and a kitchen. The second floor bedroom - bath arrangement is awkward and affords little privacy for family or guests. No rearrangement is practical. It is therefore proposed that a bedroom and bath be added on the first floor in the area now used as an open porch. The ancient kitchen, though charming, is inconvenient, since modernization through the years was limited in order to preserve the unique old features. To provide conveniences necessary today, it is planned to build a small, modern kitchen and to keep the old kitchen as an informal dining area. Architect Earle L. Kempton, West Parish's understanding and good friend, has designed these additions and will supervise the restoration. COST WILL BE $20,000 The program was developed after eight months of study by a Parsonage Committee, assisted by architect and builders, and was approved by_.the-Parish--and Church. To effect the -restoration, the sum of $20,000 will be, raised. 4- y. IT WILL RUN THROUGH JULY. This is a challenge to members and friends of West Parish Congregational Church to give! It is also a real opportunity for individuals, business firms and organizations of Barnstable and public-spirited lovers of the old Cape to help in preserving an historic monument! SOLICITATION Pledge cards will be provided for donors . . . Solicitation will be by calls on Members of the Church and Parish and on .other Attendants and Friends who reside in Barnstable and nearby towns . . . Friends who attend church in the summer and who are not in Cape residence will be solicited by mail . . . Others who might be interested in helping will be solicited either personally or by mail. PAYMENT NOW OR THREE-YEAR PLEDGES Payment may be made when solicited, or pledges made for payment later in 1968. But it is hoped that those with special interest and involvement in the Church will make pledges for giving over a period of three years in order that they may make larger donations than they could in one year. . ROLL OF HONOR The names of all donors (no amounts) will be printed on a framed Roll of Honor which will be displayed in the Parish House. Donations of $450 or more will be considered "Memorial Gifts" and will be recognized by the placement of plaques. AMOUNT OF GIVING (All gifts are Tax Deductible) It is hoped that at least one gift of $3000 may be made to erect the new addition, and that another of $2000 may be made to develop and equip the new kitchen. There are those who may be able to give $500 a year for three years. Some will be able to contribute $150 each year for three years. Some families may be able to give $100 a year. Some can give $50 a year; others $25 and others $10. But gifts of any amount from folks of all ages and from organizations will be most gratefully received. Checks payable to West Parish of Barnstable. (Mail address: West Barnstable, Mass. 02668) CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE RESTORATION COMMITTEE - — Bryan Leonard, Chairman Walter C. Schafer, Chairman John M.
