Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Three doors west of the Barnstable Village traffic light on a high bank,. stands the Greek Revival style home of John Munroe--Cape Cod 's first watchmaker. In 1809 while enroute to Virginia, the ship on which young John Munroe was sailing was forced to dock at Hyannis for repairs . Munroe decided to walk across to Cape Cod 's bay side by way of Phinneys lane. Munroe never returned to the ship and a year later married Nancy Phinney , daughter of Timothy. In 1813 John Munroe purchased this house, which had been built by carpenter Jabez Allen for his own use. At that time the house was described in colonial terms as a "low single" ,suggesting perhaps that the dwelling was a one story, half cape. It was here that the Munroes raised. their nine children and in 1834 the front section of the house was raised to its present Victorian style allowing for much needed room. Deacon Munroe, as he was called, had the only clock and watch repair6AneS5 in the county. His first shop located at the corner of the driveway to the Henry Mortimer residence (See Form #D-717) also carried his handwrought silver items---the . flatware with typical violin and fiddleback designs. According to advertisements : in the"Barnstable Patriot" his business rapidly grew as watchmaker, jeweler, silversmith and importer. Later the jewelry shop moved to the end of his yard abutting the County Road , However, due to the widening of the road , the shop had to be moved further back on the property. In 1830 the first bank was founded with Deacon Munroe appointed treasurer. Prior to C.1860 when the Barnstable Institution for Savings erected . its 10. Currently, according to the sign on the property, five (5)individual attorneys are conducting business at 3291 Main St.,Barnstable;and according to the most recent zoning map I have access to,this property is not business zoned. As an abuttor,I am concerned that the zoning code is being violated. I would appreciate your ruling. Sincerely, -iip\Merrill D.Wilson \1^ / February 18,1983 Mr.Merrill D.Wilson P.0.Box 36 Bamstable,MA 02630 RE: 3291 Miain Street,Bamstable Dear Mr.Wils<ai: Please be advised that the property located at 3291 Main Street, Bamstable is zoned Village Business A and professional offices are permitted under paragraph 7 of Section K of the Town of Bamstable Zoning By-laws. The area in question was reviewed and discussed at great length by nyself, the fhgineering Department and the attomeys for the property prior to the decision that the property was zoned Villa^Business A.Cur research revealed that Windsor Way formed the boundary. With the researched information,I would rule the property to be properly zoned for use as offices for attomeys. Peace, JDD/gr Joseph D.DaLuz Building Ccxnmissioner
