HomeMy WebLinkAboutDale Edmunds_Levanthal pier extensionFrom: Dale Edmunds <dcedmunds@comcast.net> Sent: Sunday, March 5, 2023 5:13 PM To: Cavanaugh, Kimberly Subject: Levanthal pier extension To the Barnstable Conservaon Commission c/o Kimberly Cavanaugh I am wring to oppose the proposed Levanthal pier extension. The pier is located in a narrow channel area with heavy boat traffic, both commercial and recreaonal. An extension would further restrict this pinch point, negavely impacng the safe navigaon of this primary entry point to Cotuit Bay and North Bay. The narrow passage already creates situaons where larger boats entering the bay come face-to-face with other larger boats leaving the bay without enough room to safely pass, requiring one boat to idle in place while the other boat passes. The strong current here further complicates the navigaon. Sailboats without engines experience even more difficulty navigang this narrow channel. The pier currently has an operaonal boat li. The owner also has a dinghy which provides access to the boat when it is on its mooring. We do not allow waterfront property owners to modify the shoreline when erosion occurs, so why we would we allow modificaon when natural events add sand to the shoreline? I have witnessed numerous changes to this shoreline over the years. If the shoreline later recedes, would we ask that the pier be shortened? I would also point out that the recent dredging seems to have accelerated the extension of Sampson’s Island into the channel, already narrowing the boat channel where the pier is located. I respecully ask you to decline the request to extend the pier.
