Dear Members of the Barnstable Conserva on Commission,
The proposed extension of the pier located at 185 Oceanview Ave. is opposed by the Associa on of the Cotuit Mosquito
Yacht Club (CMYC).
With the channel between Sampson’s Island and Riley’s Beach being narrow, and the resul ng very strong current,
naviga on, especially without an engine in light winds is very difficult. Extending the pier will make an already
challenging naviga on situa on much more difficult. For over 100 years the CMYC has promoted sailing and instruc ng
the youth of the area and, like many knowledgeable boaters, fully recognizes making a choke point even ghter could
certainly lead to safety issues.
The shoreline of the en re coast is constantly shi ing and it is well known erec ng any structure results in benefits for
some with detriments to others. The pier would impact a great many in the heavily trafficked area and benefit few. I
would welcome any ques ons or comments from the board and thank them for their me and par cipa on.
