INVASIVE MANAGEMENT PROTOCOLS
1025 Old Post Road, Cotuit
March 28, 2023
Vegetation Management Protocol
Vegetation management is proposed within the project areas to remove all invasive and non-native plant
species. The treatment and removal of these invasive and non-native plant species will facilitate the
establishment of the proposed planting and conservation of any existing native plant species throughout
the project area. Treatment methods will include cut and wipe technique to treat individual stems and low-
volume spot application of herbicide will only be used as necessary for plants whose stems are all too small
for effective use of the cut and wipe method. Poison Ivy is proposed for management along the pathway
where it may come into contact with people. All herbicide applications will be performed by Massachusetts
licensed applicators. Pre-treated vegetation above the bank will be mechanically removed where feasible and
hand removal where necessary to protect any existing native plants. Hand removal will be used on the bank
to protect the stability of soil on the slope. Bare soils outside of the planting area shown on the Mitigation
Planting Plan by Gregory Lombardui Design will be seeded with a native grass mixture and covered in a
biodegradable mulch product. Biodegradable erosion control blanketing will be installed on slopes, only if
needed, to protect against erosion and temporarily hold mineral soils in place until the root systems of native
grasses can establish and stabilize soils.
Ongoing Maintenance
The project area shall be monitored and maintained to prevent re-establishment of invasive species and
to ensure the health of the proposed native plants. Treatment methods, depending on species, size, and
environmental conditions, will consist of hand removal or low-volume spot application where necessary. This
proposed action is requested for the duration of the Order of Conditions with the intention that this invasive
plant management be written as an ongoing condition in the Certificate of Compliance (COC). Invasive
plants generally take three to five years of active management to reach a level of successful control. Minimal
maintenance to control invasive and aggressive plants should be an ongoing condition after the closing of the
Order of Conditions. Ongoing invasive plant management is typically carried out two to five times per year,
depending on the site conditions and response of the targeted plant species.
