While several shellfish species are native to this area, this particular part of Shoestring
Bay is severely compromised and not conducive to the settlement and recruitment of
shellfish. It is challenging to even conduct a proper survey at some of these locations in
Shoestring Bay. The shoreline currently has a rating of 3 from the 2017 Habitat
Assessment Rating Working Group; 2 people rated the area not significant and 5 were
unfamiliar with the area.
The sample plots contained no shellfish and the sediment is thick, anoxic muck. Due to
the poor conditions, Natural Resources has no objections to the proposed project.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth A. Lewis, Shellfish Biologist
