Subject:Proposed Wendy’s on West Main Street
Dear Ms. Brigham,
I’m writing in opposition to the Special Permit requested by Arista Hyannis to construct a Wendy’s on West
Main Street.
A fast food restaurant with drive-thru will bring additional traffic to an already busy intersection. Aside from
the heavy flow of traffic at school arrival and dismissal times for Barnstable High School and Hyannis West
Elementary School, the curve that was added to Pine Street to create a 90-degree intersection at West Main
Street means that sight lines are already diminished at the Pine Street curb cut of the property.
Many of the proposed customers for this fast food business are the teenagers who attend BHS. They are our
community’s least-experienced drivers whose cognitive decision-making skills are not fully matured.
Shoehorning a magnet for teens at this location will be an accident waiting to happen.
The increased traffic across these curb cuts means that students who live in the West Hyannis and South
Centerville neighborhoods accessed by Pine Street and who walk to and from school will have more impatient
drivers to contend with twice a day.
This proposal is neither safe nor sound. Please deny the application.
