HomeMy WebLinkAbout6-14-2023 - Mary George LetterJune 14th,2023 Dear Members of the HHDC, I am writing to provide an update on the status of the Hyannis Community Art Wall, opened this past May 21st.On its opening day,the Wall saw the contributions of nearly 300 community members of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. This day also saw the unveiling of an original piece of aerosol artwork, created by artist Joey Mars.Mars, being a renowned artist in the Cape community and beyond, drew a number of attendees from outside of the Mid-Cape area, who were interested in seeing his work in person. Since the opening of the Wall, the Hyannis Public Library has seen a steady stream of artist participation. The Wall has been home to various creatures, faces, words, symbols, and just about every color imaginable.Participants have included many teen-aged artists, including those participating in alternative schooling arrangements, who now use the Library as a place for study! The Wall has also welcomed several artist professionals, who have traveled from different parts of the Cape to make their marks on our collective canvas. At a recent First Friday Community Paint Night, which drew more than 150 participants,we welcomed many tourists, many of whom commented some version of “I wish we had this in my town!”One visiting family tagged the Wall with “I love the Cape.” We look forward to hosting two more First Friday Community Paint Nights in July and August,as well as changing over the professionally-commissioned work in August. We have received no complaints regarding the operation of the Wall, nor have there been any violations of the content guidelines. We are optimistic about the possibility of extending the tenure of this public art intervention and look forward to creating more community-building programming around it. Respectfully, Mary George Co-Executive Director The Cordial Eye
